What opportunities exist for the development of intermodel freight in the southern parts of NSW? I wonder if there is scope for PN to restart any services out of the Hay and perhaps the MIA area?

Comments?

I'd very much doubt PN would be interested, unless you foun a large number of containers (or a coal mine Very Happy ). If there was traffic FA or LVRF might pick it up.

How about extending the line west from Hay about Deniliquin, south-west to Kulwin, west to Ouyen thence into Adelaide via Pinaroo. It's approximately the way road does it Adelaide to the east coast.

In answering/commenting on this reponse, how much freight traffic is there between Adelaide and Sydney? I would imagine quite a bit.

Also, isthe GSR freight service still running on this route and if so, what are the loadings like?

Finally, what produce is moved between the MIA and Adelaide? I thought most of it went straight to Melbourne for export? Or does it go to Sydney?

Regards,
Brian

There is a large amount of through, time sensitive freight using this route.

The ARG service still runs which means it is still profitable for FCL and ARG. I think the loadings are pretty consistent from what I hear but the transit times via B.H. are a killer. The only freight we can really load is non-time sensitive stuff. But, it is still 'all hands on deck' at Parkes and Clyde when the train arrives....which is a good sign.

As far as MIA goes, I read somewhere that Griffith was a large loading point for freight into Botany (esp. wine). But, there is a lot heading south as well.

Is there a regular freight service by FC/PACNAT out of Griffith? Is the freight wine juice or is it packaged wine?

Don't know about a regular schedule. Maybe, someone who works for PacNat would know?

... (or a coal mine Very Happy

What about reopening the Oaklands line (or converting the Yarrawonga line to SG) for all that coal down there? Or is it not wanted any more?

If you need to get in touch, drop a comment at the Transport Textbook or on my blog.

I remember back ing the 80's, it was 5 minutes quicker to get the Intercapital Daylight Express and the Overland from Sydney to Adelaide (changing somewhere in the Melbourne 'burbs from memory - maybe Sunshine?) than it was to get the IP. As for the more direct route via Hay proposed, I suspect the improved times won't justify the cost.

The ICD/Overland -vs- IP is really not a valid comparison...we aren't talking about via Sunshine.

Parkes to Adelaide via road is 14 hours via Sturt Hwy. Parkes to Adelaide via ASR rail service is about 24 hours. That's 10 hours difference. And, yes, I realise road does have the benefit of the S.E. Freeway in SA.

Sorry maybe I should have specified - I wasn't comparing either route to the proposed route, but under those circumstances I wondered at the time why the IP, or any train for that matter, would go via BH when for a shorter trip you can pick up another capital. I think the answer to my question (at the time) was that the Overlander was broad guage.

Oh, OK, I see what you mean! Anyway, the via Hay thing is only a pipe dream!
