What would be the next proposed expansion past Mernda in that case? Whittlesea?

Is it not true (from newspaper reports) that housing development is taking place all along that corridor? If this is the case, certainly the vic. government should bite the bullet right now and put the service back to a point just beyond the major housing developments to encourage the development of communities and provide an acceptable level of public transport service.

Oh My...
You should go and have a visit around 8am in the morning, so many people live there now, I used to go to RMIT Bundoora East campus, which is not far from there, there were traffic jam from South Morang old station (the school right next to it) all the way to Ring road(Parade college)
and that was 2-3 years ago...
Hey?..whatever happen to my warning level?

If the money DOI spends on its endless Studies was actually spent on extending the system we might have a system in parallel with housing expansion, rather than always lagging years behind when most families have acquired two plus cars because of the lack of adequate public transport. |
That there is the very core of WHY there have been no rail lines built to service new low-density housing estates.
No-one, and in particular, no government would ever spend copious amounts of money to pay for a rail line into new areas, as the "1/4 acre block with lawn and backyard swimming pool" type houses that are predominantly built in these areas simply do not justify the initial capital cost of throwing a rail line or two around. Melbourne and no other Australian city which expands outwards will always place roads before rail lines in that environment.
ENTER MELBOURNE 2030 & associated "endless Studies" by the DOI.
All that money going on those studies is going into areas to identify on where and how to build higher-density residences which are huddled around existing PT infrastructure, and as I said above, South Morang / Generally North of Epping has a large show-case multi-density, PT / non-motorised commuting focus.... they're the only developments that we'll see associated rail infrastructure put in near by.
And believe you me, if this plan wasn't in the pipeline, the whole extension of the railway / new branch line would be nothing more than a pipdream....
