HI, do we know if the service will be returned along the existing ROW? Housing development has laready extended beyond the South Morang area anyhow. I would suggest the line be extended to the suburb north east of there since there are substantial estates already being developed.

Can anyone name the stations that existed along the line from South Morang going North/East toward Whittlesea?

The intention is to follow the old right of way to South Morang with provision to extend further along the old Whittlesea right of way as housing expands.

DOI website has also made vague references to a new branch off the existing Epping line at Epping and heading sort of north west.

On the old Whittlesea line stations were at Epping, South Morang,
Mernda, Yan Yean & Whittlesea.

The other thing to note about the "new" South Morang Station is that it will not be located in the same location as the former station (which remains still exist).

The new station will be about 2.5km closer to Melbourne than the old station (IIRC Melway 183A11 compared to Melway 183 G10).

Typical, anyway they can save a buck! 2.5 Kms is a fair distance.

Was the old station near the power yard next to Mcdonald road??

Also I have heard that there are houses built on the old allignment to South Morang.

Would there be any crossing loops on the extension towards South Morang?
Where are the existing crossing loops?
Where does the double track end?

Just after Keon Park, but Epping and one of the other two stations have two platforms.

One of the reasons why nothing much has happened on this project yet is that the GOvernment have a new policy that no new level crossings will be constructed in Victoria. This obviously means that beyond Epping all of the rail crossings will be grade separate adding heaps of $$$ to the value of the project.

It would be especially expensive for the road crossing at Cooper Street as Epping Station is located so close by and there is little land available to alter the alignment of the road or the railway. Although maybe as the rails still exist across the road at this location the GOvernment might argue that they are not installing a new level crossing but rather "upgrading" an existing one.

Yes they are wrestling with the grade separation issue. Understand they are talking about duplicated section from Epping to South Morang with station at Epping re-located. Can't remember the details. If you search on DOI site there is a corridor study report (northern) and it is in PDF format and you can download it and it discusses all the issues. In the short / medium term the extension will go to South Morang, with the provision to go onto Mernda at an early date.

Grade separation has to be the way to go. Just think how much it must cost in electricity to run a level crossing. And that's not even the maintenance of the bells and booms, let alone the problems with sorting out whether VicRoads or the railway have to pay for one job or another.

That would be the fourth Epping station!

I reckon the cost of the electricity would be the least of the problems.

It's the old pay-off between capital and recurring costs. A bridge doesn't involve much recurring cost - just an inspection once every so many years and repairs when necessary. A level crossing is cheaper to put in, but needs a lot more maintenance, and is less vandal-resistant. Over its life a level crossing must cost heaps more than a bridge.

Do we have a date as to when work is likely to start on this project. A friend tells me housing is already passing mernda?? so would it not be sensible to ensure the line is built to that point with increased car park size at Mernda?

There is a platform at Lal Lal so I can only assume the station was called Lal Lal. The Whittlesea platform still exists too Very Happy Infact nearly every platform does, as well as bridges are still in place. All the track bed still belongs to the government ie no houses over where the trains ran, so there is no problem in having to make an alternate route like swanston dock seeming that all the original formations are reserved if they ever wanted to re open Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
