And it all completely missed the point - when government's want something to fail they set up straw men and shoot them down
Do you remember David Hill's report on why the Alice-Darwin shouldn't be built. He assumed 3-person crews and brakevans!
Saying that an Adelaide to Brisbane line should be built is asking for the proposal to fail. More modest distances, such as Sydney Newcastle or Sydney Canberra, would prove the technology and change people's preferences - and the create demand on other corridors.
To say Australia is under-populated for this is pathetic. Urban and regional planning is not random or governed by outside forces; it is within the role of government and government does, and always has, influenced the spatial relationships in this country.
Most European areas are more densely populated than is typical here. BUT, few European population nodes are as big as those in Australia. Yes London and Paris are bigger, but you will struggle to find many more. Connurbations are more typical but therein lack a focus like Sydney CBD. Sydney to Canberra is a respectable city-pair by European standards for the distance.
The problem is driving propensity - propelled by cheap fuel, cheap and smeggy cars and poor urban planning decisions. Old baldie may be no better than Beeching - but let's hope he at least sticks to his promise to improve Cityrail's day-to-day operations so that the public gets a better idea of rail travel - then HSR is a possibility.
If you need to get in touch, drop a comment at the Transport Textbook or on my blog.

What gets me is people consistenly always quote "just a line from Sydney to Newcastle, Sydney to Canberra" bla bla would work.
Well I fundamentally disagree with that for a start-off project.
The Combined total of the Sydney and Melbourne metropolitan regions is 7.7 million people + another 1 million for everyone living in between (Hume / Wagga/ Canberra route).
AND you have all this fuss about Sydney bitching about its airport has too much traffic, when at least 20 - 30 % of the air traffic generated is between, Melbourne and Sydney!
GAH! Melbourne to Sydney and nothing less!

the idea of super fast trains in Australia isn't new, they've been wanting to put them in scince the early 1990's. according the the video "track record" the main problem is public acceptence. so they think they might have to do the same publicity stunt that Mr. Clapp. did with the Spirit of Progress.
