I agree with you. I think the electric tilt train is one of the best looking trains in Australia. I think the diesel one is pretty ugly by comparison.

i think they should replace the XPTs with tilt trains, as they look more moedern, so more people will travel on it. Also it is electric, so it should be more relyable.

I travelled on both trains before. Electric tilt train I took it last time in March this year, basically I take that train at least once a year. Cairns tilt train I took it from Cairns to Proserpine and return only 5 days ago! Laughing

My comparison based on much softer business class seats compare to firmer seats on Cairns tilt train, personally I felt even with 1+2 seating arrangement in CTT, the seat is kinda hard to sleep in, even the economic class in electric tlt train with 2+2 seating has softer seats than CTT. Electric tilt train serve either top quality grill chicken or lamb steak, desert, and morning/afternoon tea in business class, whereas Cairns tilt train meal are very simialr to the XPT one.(Simple "frozen food" style)

They wouldn't get far without overhead wires to supply them the juice. Very Happy

James C. Thanks a bunch for the pics of the RTT.The seating is excellent, looks like the interior of a Qantas aircraft.I was interested to read your assessment of the CTT.I believe it is important that passengers are happy with onboard catering,as this contributes to a sense of satisfaction.I read a lot of travelogues on the net,and one very good producer is Chris Fussell of Portland,Oregon,USA.He takes many pics, and one Talgo Tilt Train running between Eugene,Or and Seattle and Vancouver,BC,Canada is called 'The Cascades'.He shows some excellent shots of the trains and his travels, and I think we can learn a fair bit from Americans.Have a look http://www.trainweb.org/f40phr231/ It may take a little while to download.

Haven't done the CTT and not likely to - too far for the money

Enjoyed the RTT on a trip from Brisbane to Maryborough for Harvey Bay I did not long after it was launched. Really enjoyed and thought the train was very elegant.

The thing I liked about the RTT with its style, speed and catenary above you, and particularly in some settings eg lower sunshine coast stations, or at Gladstone, you can fool yourself for a moment that you are in a country that cares about rail transport - like Europe or Japan.

Then you wake up Sad and realise it was a one-off, that electorates like tilt trains as special treats, but aren't prepared to spend what will make them work - more sets, extensive realignments and charging on parallel roads.

If you need to get in touch, drop a comment at the Transport Textbook or on my blog.

Just if anyone's interested, here are my pics:

Personally, I like the RTT, but I haven't been on the CTT to see the difference. The RTT is really like a narrow airliner with wide windows. The service aboard the train was brilliant. Very Happy

If only this kinda of train also existed in NSW Sad
