I was in Adelaide taking photos for my employer of the first ASR service Dry Creek to Parkes to Sydney. We did all the in cab shots etc. My friendly ASR driver asked if I might go to Broken Hill with them. I had to decline the offer and return to FCL Adelaide to actually do some real work! |
Wow, what a dissapointment. I had the opportunity to travel on the Central West XPT (Dubbo) with a driver who is a friend of my Mum's. Unfortunatly he retired from the service due to back problems, an opportunity gone missing, but maybe for the best, with the WaterFall tragedy recently.
Preservation Groups are great, as recently mentioned by Maikha. It's a great way to enjoy a hobby without annoying CityRail staff. Not that I personally would though. I enjoy photographing trains from stations etc. but stay out of the way of employees trying to do their jobs!

Another interesting aspect on all this is that unfortunatly we have gone from been a very easy going and laid back society which made Australia famous all those years ago to NSW being the third most litigious state in the world per head of population only lagging behind California and Florida. Yes I know it shocked me too when I first heard this as I thought all the US states would be way in front of us.
Now in regards to cab rides just imagine if one of you where in the cab of my train and someone decided to jump in front of us and the next thing you know we have a fatality. Just to set an example about 3 weeks ago there where 3 fatalities involving Intercity Eveleigh Drivers in the space of 4 days (one at Bombo, one at Thornleigh, and the last one at Normanhurst) now thats 3 in 4 days involving Drivers and trains from the same depot, and atm they average 2 a week so it is a frequent event. Now its traumatising enough for a driver who's an adult so can you imagine the effect it would have on someone who is only say 16 years old. So how is the driver going to explain this one when it comes time to do a police report on the incident. As I stated at the beggining people these days see big $$$$ signs with incidences like these, so I can just imagine the parents of a 16 year old kid than sewing State Rail for traumatising their son for pain and suffering etc.
Now the reason I mentioned this senario is that it almost took place 2 years ago but the railways setteled out of court.
So there you go another reason why I refuse to have anyone up in my cab with me anymore, and its a shame as I personally know most of you on this discussion board.

You have to do what's right for you, Starwars, so I agree with you.
The litigious nature of western society is really a very destructive force. It seems that no-one needs to accept responsibility for their actions anymore as there is always someone to sue...."it's not MY fault, it's THEIR fault!" It's really piss-weak. If you f*** up, then put your hand up to it.
