countrylink fare return (econ) $167.20

That's the full fare that you are quoting - if you book at the right time, you may only pay half of this - very few people actually pay the full fare except for last minute bookings.

The problem with overnight services, I would imagine, is that business travellers also don't want to arrive to do their business looking like they slept in their clothes (as they would almost have to have done if they're not getting a hotel room).

Another problem is it is less popular with people wishing to travel only part of the way, because they don't want to start or finish their trip at 2am.

The tamworth-armidale line and also the murwillumbah line exist soley for a daily passenger service, there is no freight so both these lines would be a large expense.

When did the superphosphate to Dumaresq stop?

Silverton had a serious customer wanting to move freight by rail from Glen Innes to Newcastle, but the then RAC rejected the proposal out of hand.

Hey,

What are some differences between the 900 and 620/720 sets?

I went and did some investigating today and I got some photo's to prove it. so if anyone wants a look let me know. Now, I am sure the restored cars are a 620/720 set. There are 5 other cars, 4 with cabs and 1 intermediate (buffet) car.

THere is apparently a letter in the local paper calling for the cars to be removed becasue they are an eye-saw.

Paper's still calling Xpl's XPT's. I am going to have to do something about this!!

The easiest way to identify them is the windows.

620/720 set (NPF623 - NTC723)

900/DEB set (HPF954 - TC751 - TCR862 - PF901)

There's always a moron somewhere about writing a damn letter! Where's a gun when you need it!!! Twisted Evil

I haven't travelled on NSW pass rail much but they look pretty good to me. If locals want the local pass to remain they have to USE it!!!

But I think the entrepreneurial spirit is the way to go. Make your own destiny....don't wait for M. Costa to ruin it for you.

I remember yonks ago when Hamer Gov't closed the Balmoral line in western Vic. All the farmers kicked up a big stink saying they'd be ruined but the fact was none of them used it.

Cheers!

umm....it's 'eyesore', btw Wink

If the fare was lower if I travel overnight than during the day, then I would certainly travel by train.

David

As far as I know the superphosphate is still there. The last time I was out there was Feb. and the shed was pretty full. The line has been wired off just out of Armidale for cattle and sheep to graze, and there have been no trains past Armidale in a year or so.

Thank you also for the photo's. The 2 they are doing up as well as the 4 other power cars there are 620/720's, and there is an intermediate which looks like the 900 intermediate, and has a buffet fitted.

Don't get into too much of a stitch the report recommends Countrylink replace SOME intra-state rail services with Countrylink coach services, and Inter State train services don't even get a mention. A good summary is available at www.nsw.gov.au click on link for Draft Transport Report, and open in Acrobat format and all you need read is the Executive Summary in the first 30 pages or so.

But having said that kuldalai, it's the first steps which are always the most worrying...considering that if some services are cut (rather than being expanded...i.e. - spend money to make money) then it follows that most if not all services will get cut sooner or later (and considering the Carr Governments attitude to the NSW Clubs Association re:pokies tax, they won't give two hoots about a couple of people complaining... Confused)

They should also promote CountryLinks services more, i.e. Commercials that stir some interest, or The Great Outdoors/Getaway doing a special on what the advantages of taking a particular service/s could do for a great weekend away.

They need to advertise their product, it seems the only solution, to get the consumers confidence back to travelling by Rail. I think that the media really has had a picnic taking apart CityRail and CountryLink's major faults, and it would be a great way to gain a bit more credibility towards the Infrastructure.

I'm very saddened by the proposed cuts of services, especially the Central West (Dubbo?) XPT. I usually take this 3-4 times a year. Its a wonderful trip to go up their, although i only go as far as Orange, this will be a great loss.

I hope the State Government can get it together Laughing

If the Inland rail guy got his way, this may not be the last time some of these towns get a passenger rail service

You could run legs of an interstate rail services from Melbourne to Parkes and Brisbane to Parkes, with cars shunted onto the Terrific for Adelaide/Perth/Darwin.

Imagine one big train like spokes on a wheel.

Melbourne leg could do Shep, Tocumwal, Narrandera, Forbes and Parkes. Brisbane leg do Parkes, Dubbo, Coonabarabran (an often overlooked town) Narrabri, Moree, Goondawindi Warwick and Toowoomba. Obviously some cars could go through MEL-BNE. Sydney 'spoke' obviously Orange, Blayney, Bathurst and Lithgow.

For mine, I would enjoy a small sprinter or similar off the Mel leg at Narrandera for Leeton and Griffith. Idea

This would be the Amtrakisation of Australian interstate rail - all run by GSR with standard stainless-steel cars.

These services could be marketed as cruise services, but give the NSW govt a few cars at the back for their oldies, trailer trash etc otherwise stick buses on or even better - consider entering the 20th century and subsidising the plane tickets.

If you need to get in touch, drop a comment at the Transport Textbook or on my blog.

I doubt Mel-Par-Ade would take off, as the direct route is faster

Sadly, it is highly likely that the Mel-Pks-Bne inland route will go via the Goulburn Valley, Toc, Narrandera or Narrabri. They are taking the easy option via Wagga, Stockinbingal, Forbes, Parkes, turn right at Dubbo, wend your way to Moree, etc.

Missing out on the export potential of the Goulburn Valley and Riverina.

Good idea about the pass rail, though!!!
