Not everyone gets one of those magazines. Some aren't a member of anything, they just watch trains on their own.

I suspect that you will find that the circulation experts will have statistical methods of extending magazine circulation into some sort of demographic - but you would probably have to pay a fair bit to get that sort of information.

I note from the published figures in some US magazines that specialist magazines tend to have a much higher subscriber base than more genral magazines

Rather ironic that I asked this question last week. I am going to be interviewed by ABC Regional radio next week about "trainspotting" (their term, not mine) as a hobby. I intend to use this opportunity to dispel a few myths about the hobby, particularly the image of the traditional British anorak types.

Are there any other constructive messages the railfan world at large would like put across?

Cheers

It's being produced by ABC Kalgoorlie of all places and I'm not sure how widely it will be broadcast. They will send me a tape and I should be able to turn it into an MP3.

David, you got a tough question there.
All one can say, like I read in a post of a railfan somewhere on the forums here stating that his girlfriend said to him, "This "railspotting" is so addictive, that she could stand here amongst all these railfans and no one would notice her with no clothes on." (not exact word for word, but the meaning is there) I think that sums "trainspotting" up perfectly.

Anyway, give the ABC a good laugh, if nothing else. Wink

Regards,
John.

My favourite thing to say about it is that it's not nearly so bad as some other things. Fresh air, exercise, no computer screens (unless you belong to a forum like this and post a lot Embarassed ) etc. Better than tinkering with cars or motorbikes (petrol fumes and road accidents) or video games, or binge drinking.

You have to pick your audience. If you think they're "normal" types (whatever that means) don't show yourself to be a single-track-mind gunzel, just a "normal" person who likes trains.

I've never had any problems with my peers (Non-gunzels) from school with regards to my interest/involvement in trains. My new school this year for Yr11 is St Marys Senior High School located adjacent to the main western line at St Marys. At times during my free periods, I am seen out in the main field either watching or photographing the traffic that passes and no one seems to care, or even be curious to ask (Except one girl, who sparked a friendship with me on it).

My trick though is to keep my railway interest undercover, and let everyone else 'figure it out' for themselves. Do this by not openly telling people "Hey, I love trains. I'm a foamer, I think Tangaras are cool", etc, or having all this railway merchandise on you like railway stickers, photos or wearing hats with Tangaras on them and a spinning red propeller on top (Sorry, Aus.rail talk here).

The way I did it, alot of my peers were aware of my involvement with the Zig Zag Railway as a train guard. They all saw this as a part-time job that I loved, and not necessarily an interest. From this, they also saw that I was knowledgable in railway operations and management, since 90% of people from my school catch the train to come here. I have since become the school's liason for the railways, and on a regular basis, I get asked advice type questions like "How do I catch a Millennium train?", "What line do I have to catch to get to xxxx and what stations do I change at?", "Is there anyway I can get away with not having a ticket", etc.

As with my involvement with Zig Zag, I'm fortunate for everyone I know at school to appreciate this as a unique part-time job I have, compared to the very typical ones teenagers end up working in, like saying "Would you like fries with that" at maccas, or stacking shelves in a store. It's something very different to them, and more or less, it is admired.

As with females, I've never ever had one who seemingly expressed a problem and/or dislike for my interest in trains.....but rather curiousity or wonder about what is involved in being a train guard and how I handle the job at the age of 16yrs.

I hope this helps

I had no problems back in high school, afterall, I went to a high school in QLD where QR started to improve and taking shape back then.

But I had alot of problems with my university peers Sad
Afterall I went to a petrolhead university...where friends, lecturers tried to brain wash me to get into boring crap like Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, BMW etc. Yeah right, gimme a SD90 or Siemens Taurus anyday!

When I used to talk about trains in university, people had their eyes wide open and shocked....

i have a few problems at school with a few year 8 students who know alot of people in year 9 who i know. the year 8 students act like a toddler impersenating a train when they are near me (do the wheel thing with the hands). Although at first when the others in my form found out, they just kept asking why i would do what i do, and now they don't even ask anymore.

i hardly cop s*** anymore, but when everyone in my form kept talking about trains (i think they are trying to make me embarassed), eventualy i snapped at this midget in my class and i yelled at him these words "Why the **** do you keep on and on and on about railways? if you love talking about trains so much, why don't you ******* joind all the railways in the country?" that shut him up ever since (6 months and counting! Very Happy )

School reunions aren't compulsory. And if you don't mind me asking, how old are you two?
