Check out a previous topic in the NSW forum - http://www.railpage.org.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2119

The topic is locations in the Hunter Valley to trainspot. This should have plenty of good suggestions for you.
You need to scroll to page 2 of the topics on the NSW forum if you can't reach it directly via the link I have cut & pasted above.

Have fun up here in Newcastle - its a great place to visit! Wink

Go to Morandoo and Port Waratah. If you are at Morandoo by about 1300 you can usually catch a shot of the Brisbane - Wollongong steel train (*BW4) arriving into the yard (usually between 1300-1400). Good places to photgraph it are:

Scholey Street bridge - go down Mayfield back streets
Industrial Drive bridge - GOOD SPOT - Either on top of the bridge or under it with a stepladder or something to look over the security fencing.

The same train will shunt and attach/detach traffic and then depart between 1530 - 1630 (tabled @ 1630).

You can also go to Carrington and view shunting from the overhead footbridge which takes you to the harbour side.

Have fun

Cheers,
Steamy
