Why don't they get Walkers to do it - they're doing another few 4000-class already and they're so similar in performance it makes almost no difference.

I have been told that Interail may have the contract to haul Baal Bone coal trains, but was also told that they would need locomotives with a lot more power than they currently have.

Walkers is part of EDIrail and a licencee of EMD. The closest EMD match to the Interail requirement would be the SD70MAC but Walkers doesn't really have experience in building things that big. And even if they could they they would have to be carried to Newcastle by ship. Even building them at the ex-Clyde factory Bathurst would be problematic.

The best match from the GE catalogue would be the CW44AC, which Goninan could build very easily in Newcastle. I suggest that part of the deal was that Interail would support local business in getting the Hunter coal contracts.

I would suggest that any domestic US loco would not fit our loading gauge. We are talking 10ft 6 inches wide by over 15 ft high and they are long beasts not to mention an axle load of 35 tons.

Obviously it would need a new body as do all licence built US locos, but the rest you can buy off the shelf. Just like turning an F7 into a GM or SD-40 into a C. I'm guessing Goninan would try to fit the innards of a CW44AC into the shell of an NR. The narrower and shorter frame should bring it down to about the same weight as a 90.

A 90 being about 165t, which means it can only use the Hunter Valley line, apart from an occasional trip to Delec with limited fuel to keep the weight down...

I still reckon they should be able to do something pretty good with the fact that they're getting a bunch of 4000s - extend the production run somehow to bring the cost down.

The 4000s are a nice loco but they may not be the best loco for the job. The requirement is for over 4000hp per loco and a higher axle load. The 90s weigh 165t for a reason.

Seems Interail (QR) have hired an ex WAGR L class in the meantime for some of these trains.
Pics in the latest Railway Digest.
