Can anyone tell me when ARG will be taking the contracts over from Pacific National and when they will start running?

ARG have advertised for drivers at Junee, Parkes, Gunnedah, Nowra, Grafton and Sydneyin Sydney newspapers in September. Looks like they are taking over all the Manildra work. Railway Digest page 11 refers. I believe the current issue of Motivepower has some info in it as well.

There is a post elsewhere about the Manildra contract which they have taken from PacNat. It's worth $30m.

RURAL AND BULK DIVISION
STAFF NEWSLETTER

12 September 2003 ISSUE 1/03

A special newsletter for Rural and Bulk Division employees

MANILDRA CONTRACT

The Manildra Group has now confirmed that it intends to engage the services of the Australian Railroad Group (ARG) for its rail transport needs commencing in approximately 3 months time.

The loss of this business, in spite of the customer’s continued satisfaction with our service, is regrettable and we understand that many employees will be concerned about what it means for them.

It is however essential that we remain focussed on safety and continue to perform our roles to the best of our ability during this transition process.

The loss of this business is likely to mean that we have excess staff in some locations.

We believe that the improving Grain Harvest Forecast will, to some extent, offset the loss of this work and minimise the need for redundancies. Staff can be assured that Pacific National will honour the employment guarantee and will manage any staff reductions through the voluntary redundancy processes. It is unlikely that such processes would be invoked for several months.

ARG's ability to secure this business demonstrates the extremely competitive nature of the rail transport business in New South Wales. It further underlines the need for us all to maintain our reform agenda, and continue to improve productivity and efficiency.

If you have any questions please speak to your manager.

General Manager Rural and Bulk Division
