I saw Polar Express last night. Not bad.

You see lots of detail of the (animated) steam train, which looked pretty accurate to this gunzel (who wouldn't be able to pick faults in a steam cab anyway). Smile

The token obnoxious kid on the train was a gunzel! Sad (Well, at least a know-it-all including knowing that the loco was a Baldwin whatever built in 1931 (from memory) etc. etc.). By the way, I wonder why Santa, living at the North Pole and travelling around the world, has an American-style steam train??

We could fill an entire forum on that one. But probably best left alone. Smile

John of Melbourne wrote:
Ever see a steam train do a handbrake turn? You see it in this movie! True! (Think Lake Baikal for a clue.)

I also found it interesting how it was possible to steer the train on ice. Apparently the wheels on either side must be able to turn at different speeds or directions.

John of Melbourne wrote:
The grades were a touch steep for a steam train though--in fact some made the Katoomba Scenic Railway look flat!

And weren't the speeds fantastic. I understand the movie was also released in the US on IMAX 3-D. I'll be travelling to an IMAX cinema if and when the IMAX version makes it here.

John of Melbourne wrote:
And I'm sure that there was a continuity problem or three with the number of carriages on the train.

And whatever length the train was, interestingly the only people on it were those in the last 2 carriages. Nobody got off the other carriages at the North Pole.
I loved the way the loco and cars became somewhat flexible as they curved around the tight curves at the top of the spiral up a mountain. I've built a model of this track in N scale. The train only goes up the lower part of the spiral and disappears down to ground level. Children keep waiting to see it appear on the upper level.

Shocked Oh My God.. NOW I really hate Channel 9!

I don't know if anyone out there has notice.. Mr Kerry 'look at me i'm god cause i have soo much money plus a casino' Packer's channel 9 was suppose to air a documentary about 'Runaway Trains' this Saturday from 7:30 to 8:30 just before a Movie named 'The Towering Inferno'

But has been replaced by a double episode of 'Malcolm in the Middle'

If you check the 'TV Guides' on the Ninemsn website or any online TV guide website well you will see the change.. but if you check you local guides in your local paper it's still shows that this Saturday has the 'Runaway Train' on that time slot!

So yeah... the media has derailed us train buffs again by not showing any more Train related tv shows! Evil or Very Mad

I saw Romper Stomper the other day on video and I was wondering if anyone knows why Richmond station was passed off as Footscray station, near the beginning of the movie?

Did anybody happen to see NCIS last night? There was a scene supposedly at an Amtrak station, with an E unit (definately not in Amtrak livery) moving at low speed and a yard full of older style wagons and cars. Anybody know where it was?

Did anyone see last Friday, "Scooter X, the spy" or some kids show at 1600 on Ch10.

Full of Puffing Billy scenes. An NA class locomotive in a park that kept getting stolen, and so Scotter and his sidekicks tracked down the location of the locomotive, only to be caught and escaped on the NA (7A) by accidently pushing the regulator and it steaming off.

The antagonists try to stop them by driving Scooter's car infront of the path of their loco at a level crossing. They keep going and smash through his car.

I must remember that next time I see it. I have spent time at Richmond and Footscray, so thanks for the tip, PalmerEldritch.

One movie that hasn't been mentioned is The Silver Streak, which was a Richard Pryor/Gene Wilder movie. The one thing that gets me is maybe vigilance controls in the USA are different to what we have here. Other than that scene and the scene where Gene Wilder collides with a signal, it wasn't bad.

I'm not crazy, M'Lynn, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

I don't know if anyone has heard of this movie, but I saw it a few years ago on Channel 9. It was called "Seconds To Spare" or something and it featured what appeared to be the Westlander, which was hauled by two 2300 class locos.

Does anyone know where I could get it on Video/DVD and when will it be back on TV again?

Thanks

Jamie

The bit where they're outside the shed...

Bad guy: "Do you hear that noise?"
Coal Bunker: "Yes, it sounds like an NA Class locomotive, number 8A"

I think you will find they are different buckets of money. Unlike other tourist railway Puffing Billy is a combination of the Emerald Tourist Railway Board and the Puffing Billy Preservation Society. The structure is from the 1970's setup when only the government could own/run railways in Victoria. Its success lead to the arrangements the other Tourist Railways use today.

The ETRB and PBPS have different responsibilities with the ETRB responsible for running the trains while the PBPS provides thhe volunteers. When it comes to other there are some grey lines. The PBPS does things which are for the good of the railway or its volunteers but can't be justified in a business sense. Examples of these projects are Gembrook Restoration, G42 and the Climax. The board has a business case for 6 NA's so the restoration of them is an ETRB responsibilty as are the diesels.

The PBPS has a group specifically raising money for the Climax as it did for G42 and Gembrook. There was a business decision made by the PBPS when G42 was being restored that money collected by these groups for a specifc project will be allocated to that project. Hence money donated for the Climax will not be used for 8A or any other project unless there is a suplus after the Climax is completed.

Having said that they both work closely together to ensure that jobs get done so if you wanted to donate money to get 8A rolling I am sure the PBPS would accept it and pass onto the ETRB for you. Smile

Seconds From Disaster: Wreck of the Sunset Limited - 10.30pm tonight on Seven. This is a National Geographic doco about the accident in 1993 when the train fell into a river after a barge hit a bridge.
