Just going back to Lawrence of Arabia, most of the track that he blew up back in the first world war still hasn't been repaired/rebuilt and there are still locomotive carcases on there side in the middle of the desert.

Any chance any of the TV station going to screen "Off the Rail" from New Zealand's TVNZ network? it's bloooody brilliant, not to mention it won best documentry award.
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/tvone_story_skin/480955%3fformat=html
A train trip from Cairo to Aswan two years ago was the genesis for TV One's new Sunday night show, Off The Rails.
Back in February 2003, presenter Marcus Lush was in Egypt on an Intrepid Journey with that show's creator, Melanie Rakena of Jam TV.
"We were talking about trains being the ideal way to travel and Marcus started telling us about New Zealand's incredible rail history," says Rakena.
"There was so much about this aspect of our heritage that was new to me and we realised, as we hurtled down the Nile, that it would make a great programme."
A train buff himself, Lush's enthusiasm swept the crew along as they travelled from one end of the country to the other on a remarkable array of railways to make the 12 part series.
"We started in Bluff and ended up in Opua and, inbetween, we've been on coal trains, freight trains, steam trains, railcars, even a jigger or two," says Lush.
"The people we've met along the way have been amazing - passionate about trains but equally knowledgeable about New Zealand history and some of our more famous - and infamous - characters."
That passion is the reason Off The Rails is sub-titled A Love Story.
Rakena says, even though she grew up in Temuka - home of the railway cup - she was surprised at the richness of New Zealand's rail history.
"I've always liked riding on trains but now they seem to have permeated my life. I've found out so much about our past that I didn't know, from tragedies like the Seacliff fire and Hyde rail crash to engineering wonders like Denniston on the West Coast.
"Then's there the architecture - the beautiful lacy viaducts in the North Island and George Troup's amazing railway stations.
"It's been a journey of discovery and, throughout the series, Marcus' love of trains and New Zealand really shines through," says Rakena.
His fervour is clearly infectious as, late last year, Lush and Rakena crossed Russia on the trans-Siberian railway for the forthcoming series of Intrepid Journeys.
"That was an eye-opener as there are great tracts of Russia that can only be reached by rail so absolutely everyone travels by train," says Rakena.
After roughing it for so long, maybe the pair's next trip should be on the legendary, and luxurious, Orient Express.

The 1978 remake of The Thirty-Nine Steps, 12.30am Thursday on ABC. This is the least frequently screened of the three films and not a patch on Hitchcock, but is the most faithful to the novel. The railway scenes were filmed on the Severn Vallry Railway.
Cheers

As I was working nightshift, I was able to watch it. It was a good filler for a couple of hours. It showed how sad the depression was in the 1930's in the USA

Last Night A1 on Austar had The Great Indian Railways on, how the last of the steam locos kept working untill the late 1990's. They don't seem to keen on preservation overthere. Locos were being sold for scrap.

Back to the Future III is being shown on Ten on Sat night.
The 1984 ABC drama series Palace of Dreams is being repeated again on THursday nights. The 'live' action is intermixed with archival footage from the 1930s. Last night there was pre-1940 film of VR K107 hauling E cars and the original Norman/Inspection car (being described by the voiceover as the "night train to Sydney").

Damm rivet counters, its a classic !
Especially when they lockdown the train, switch to diesel and go onto the ghost line.
Be grateful they do not remake it...
