Can anyone list or have any info on the Privatly owned/ran Industrial Railways in Australia particaually in New South Wales and Victoria.
This can include cane railways in Queensland.

G'day,

A good list of cane railways in Queensland (as well as a fair bit of info pertaining to these railways) can be found at the Light Railway Research Society Sugar Railway Page - http://www.lrrsa.org.au/LRR_SGR.htm

If you have any other questions on these, just ask Very Happy

No worries, but if you have any specific questions, I might be able to help you out (depends on the mill)..

As for books, I don't have any myself (spent too much time as a youngster with the real thing to be bothered with books, but that is about to change), but 3 good books that I have heard about (and glanced at on a few occasions) are:

One For The Road
Wheels In Motion (1998)

both of these books are by Andy Roberts..

Another book would be "Built By Baldwin", which came out last year.. can't remember the author's name atm, but the detail is quite good, and this book also covers the mining locos etc that E.M. Baldwin built. This book should be available through the ARHS.

Locos for sale don't seem to come up too often, although Mackay Sugar/Transfield (who manage Mackay Sugar's railways etc) had an auction a few months ago to sell off surplus rollingstock (and other stuff), although most of the locos involved here were rather old/small and part dismantled locos. I think a few went for up to $7000.

As for other locos for sale, that all depends on how well the sugar industry is. If a bit (heap) more money makes its way into the industry, some mills might be able to buy some bigger/new locos (well, at least rebuild some more Walkers DH locos), thereby allowing some of the older stuff to be withdrawn/sold - the fist clyde to be built for cane railways use (Macknade Mill loco 16) turns 50 this year IIRC.

On the other hand, the sugar industry may continue to suffer financial difficulties, and hence, a few more mills might close (following the lead of Moreton Mill at Nambour - and the rumoured closure of Mossman Mill), hence making a few locos surplus to requirments (assuming the locos from the closed mills aren't snapped up by other mills).
