I was out at Roma St station the other day, first time I had ever gone there for the sake of looking at trains - although not entirely new to an interest in rail transport, I am new to Queensland, sort of - I spend msot of my time in Sydney, where I am at University, but am up here in Brisbane with my parents at the moment, who moved over here from NZ a year ago.

Anyway, I was out at Roma St the other day, and I saw what I assume was an ICE unit, coming from the Mayne direction, with the sign 'Gympie North' on it.

My question is, where else do the ICEs run? Surely they aren't just used down from Gympie and back once a day? I have been on EMUs, SMUs (wouldnt have a clue if they were 200 or 220s - how do you tell?) and IMUs before, but I have yet to encounter an ICE, and would like to...

Also, reading back through the posts here, I gather these units used to be used on the Spirit of Capricorn services to Rockhampton. What other non-citytrain services have they run, or is that it?

Cheers for any info, and I look forward to participating more in this forum,

NM

ICEs are mostly confined to the North Coast/Sunshine coast line and besides from Gympie North, they run some services to Nambour/Cooroy.

Cheers.

So is there anyway of knowing which specific services will be operated by ICEs, or is it pot luck with any Nambour/Cooroy service. Would it only be IMUs operating there instead, or does anything do the long routes? Regardless, looks like I shall have to make a trip north if I want to get an ICE then...

Cheers,

.

The last service with ICE units to Rocky ran last year. It was canned when the Cairns tilt train commenced along with a major timetable adjustment for all QR travel trains.

Forgive those who do not travel by train for they will not inherit the earth!

On the Sunshine Coast timetable the train numbers (listed on the top of the train times) which indicates the "X" prefix means that it's a ICE service. In most cases though, it's pot luck as those ICE services are sometimes substituted by either the EMU or the SMU

I took ICE back in Oct last year on a Nambour services, I was disappointed to see how they left ICE in a rather bad status, ie vandalised toliet and window with scratches...but I guess QR has only very limited number of IMU, they have to keep ICE in Nambour, Gympie service for a while and treat it as an Interurban.

I always wodnered what if they refurbish the train with tilt mechanism install and refurbish the interior, leave it as a back up set for electric tilt train in case one breaks down, or even increase frequency of electric tilt train by one extra return services to Rocky daily.

Hey?..whatever happen to my warning level?

There was a time ICE was sent to do Yerrongpilly(Spelling?) and Corida shuttle!

That sounds a bit like send XPT to do Carlingford/Clyde services!!

Thanks for the replies everyone, very helpful.

Out of interest, how many ICE units are there? Also, can anyone else get onto the ICE page at the QRIG site. It refuses to work for me...

I'm fairly sure that this is because Dean (the webmaster) is undergoing some changes to the motive power listing database/scripting and hasn't implemented the info for the ICE sets as yet. No doubt Dean will come across this thread eventually and let us all know what is happening.

i remember riding the ICE train on the corinda - yerongpilly shuttle back in 2001 when i was going to tafe, i liked changing trains and riding it rather than go into the city and back out.

i never took any photos of it then, i wish i had.

Yep ... Steve has it spot on. I'm yet to finish off the ICE, SMU220, and Electric Tilt sections at this stage ... its still on my list of things that need doing to QRIG.org.

Stay tuned ... I'll have it finished soon.

I took the 10:58 Roma St - Cooroy service on Wednesday in the hope of getting an ICE (its a long trip, and the train number in the timetable started with an X). Sadly, it wasnt to be, got SMU 244 instead. I did overhear the guard/conductor (what's the correct term?) talking to a couple of retired rail guys sitting behind me on the return service - he said its normally an ICE that runs the service. Oh well, my bad luck I guess - I'll have to do it another time.

I must say the run up the Cooroy is rather scenic, especially out around the Glasshouse Mountains area...
