Here's a pic of what could be an old goods platform at Wyong (just down). It's also a hop, skip and a jump to Wyong Racecourse so it could also have been for that. Maybe they ran Rail Motors to it? It's only about 200 m from the present Wyong station so it makes you wonder why they'd bother. Then again there's Clarendon (Hawkesbury Racecourse) on the the Richmond line as an example.

I reckon it was a goods platform, take a look at this photo (although it's fairly old and poor quality) the men seem to be loading sleepers on a wagon in a similar position.

What an interesting thread this has been!

On the up side of Hornsby station was a small loco shed, a couple of sidings and a turntable. This was for the operation of the Hornsby-Cowan shuttle (when the wires stopped at Hornsby, or at least, at the car sidings, as they were known). 30-class and a LUB set used to do this run, approx. hourly.

Also, does anyone remember the pick-up goods that used to come down as far as St Leonards, serving also sidings at Chatswood and Gordon. Worked by 50-53-class and later 48's?

Aah, the Good Old Days . . .

I worked in Chandos St and later Christie St, St Leonards for about 5yrs during the mid to late 80s and during some of that time was a rail commuter. The St Leonards railway station of that time was a far cry indeed from today!

While I don't recall ever seeing the goods service that you describe edison, I do recall that there was a siding on the eastern side (IIRC) accessed from the Up track. Would the pick-up goods you described have lobbed into this siding?

Wurx -

Yes, it did, and I agree about the old (first) station, with the open-air ramp down from the Pacific Hwy overbridge. The pick-up used to arrive most nights of the week, between 8 and 10 pm. It also served sidings on the Down side, north of the substation building.

Just thought, there was so much less ambient noise in the environment in those days - I lived about half-way between the Pac Hwy and the harbour, in Greenwich, and could hear the above train at night, and also the chorus of whistles that would occur at Darling Harbour whenever a driver did his last trip!

Cheers,

Edison

Does the Mortuary station at Central in Sydney count as a dead platform?

Better you should ask that of the "passengers" in the "box" seats.... Laughing

UPDATE

It recently surfaced on another thread somewhere that there was to be sextuplification of tracks between Sydenham and Illawarra Junction.

Apparently the project was begun in the late 40s, and between then and a decade on, was stopped & started several times, due to the usual BS reasons that will always hamper any public infrastructure project: pollie tricks (politics) Evil or Very Mad

(OT, this was why it took just over half a century for the completion of the construction of the ESR Rolling Eyes )

Anyway, back to the abandoned sextup. Had it been completed, the Banko would finish at Illawarra junction, instead of at Sydenham, where Banko trains have always had to cross over to/from the Illawarra Local lines. The dead platties at St. Peters would be 1 (up Banko) & 2 (down Banko), and the relevant pathway constructed under the Princes Hwy. The Coulson St and Macdonald St under-line bridges would be carrying six tracks instead of four; and at Erko, the dead back of (now) platform 1 would be down Banko, with an up Banko platform across from it (this one was never built AFAIK).

Which, I hope, will put the coffin story in its, erm, coffin.......

There are another couple of dead platforms in Melbourne on the Sydenham line.
There is the old up platform at St Albans located on the opposite side of the level crossing.
There is also the platform at the old Sydenham station building.
Both these platforms are still intact, but cannot be accessed by the public.

Could the old parcels platform at Belgrave be classified as a dead platform?

At Rydal (NSW) and Tarana the double line has been singled, so that one platform is out of use. Maybe Sodwalls as well.

At Molong, the main line has been slewed over to the old Loop Line so as to use the Loop Line bridge which is in better condition than the Main Line Bridge. The gap between main platform and train is very wide.

Orange station has a dock platform with no tracks in it.

Canterbury has a former turnback platform with no track in it, with a very wide gap to the nearest Goods track.

Parkes has two dead dock platforms at the west end of the main platform.

Milthorpe is like Molong - diverted tracks for platform clearance. No more special trains can stop there.

I dont think these have been mentioned:
Newcastle platform No5,later used for storing DMU's,then track removed for carparking, then buses.
Maitland Dock platform at the up end of platform 1.It's been filled in,but I can remember an occasional carriage being stored there.
I think it was for the Morpeth branch when the connection faced Maitland.
Nearly all the platforms exist on the SMR,some with track, and some without. Most could hold 8 to 10 carriage trains.
Old platorms at Cockle Creek for the West Wallsend line(don't know if they're still there).

Strictly speaking, these were the original main line which crossed cockle creek on the original bridge.

The the main line was deviated onto the new bridge and Cockle Creek got 4 platforms (2 for goods only). Say 1960.

Then the junction to the coal balloon loop was relocated to the south side of the new bridge, and the old bridge and two platforms closed. Say 1980.

Newbridge had an island platform in double line days. Assuming that the platform remained after singling, one side flanks the mainline while the other flanks a perway(?) siding.

IIRC the platform at Sodwalls no longer exists.
