Speaking of acronyms, this one came up in, naturally, a biology lesson:

Q: What does DNA stand for?

A: Have a go at working it out, then open the next post

I got another, and I'm not sifting through 20-odd pages of posts to find if it's been done...

Stemming from a thread in SA, "thort" in place of "thought" is most annoying! It's not that effing hard to do it, in the end it comes down to laziness. I do, occasionally abbreviate when appropriate, bt nt evry wrd, othawise itd b Evil or Very Mad

I follow Van Berloism. What did you put on your Census form?

If you are not sure, there is a spell check function, or, as I have done sometimes, cut and paste into word.

A few people spell thought as "thort"

TA3015, u cn ushualy tel if its abreeveathion or ppel who dnt now how 2 spel.

I don't mind longer words being spelt incorrectly, but simpe three or four letter words.

We should be blaming the do-gooder groups for allowing students to finish school without knowing how to spell & for not allowing students to fail, just in case they upset them!

I have also seen a number of people type these words "dose", "whould". "nt"

EG:
Quote:
"when dose loco 1709 start its steam trials?"

The words are "does", "would".

I think "nt" means "not".

I'm amazed at the dismal spelling on these pages by supposed university students. It's not the odd common misspelling - I know I'm not perfect - there's a few I have to think about. However, some are so basic that I can't believe they didn't have to repeat Year 6 until they could spell.
I guess the problem with having teachers checking spelling these days is that a lot of them can't spell anyway.
When you can't comprehend what the writer is saying it has really gone far enough. Some commentators around here (well NSW forum) are nigh impossible to understand sometimes. The woman who wrote "Eats Shoots and Leaves" calls this "unreasonable transfer of effort". It's all well and good for you to bang of an email in 10 seconds without thinking but if it takes two people half an hour to understand it then you have merely redistributed the effort.

I know we won't offend anyone on this thread as the perpetrators would never read this!!

PS I have trouble spelling misspell!

A misspelling that seems to be through ignorance that I've noticed a lot on another site, but also seen here, is intergrated (instead of integrated, for those that don't know).

from an SA thread

Ludicrous Rolling Eyes. I hope this isn't the standard of our prime minister in 20 years time.

I don't normally point out individual errors, well certainly not ones made in posts here, but when they are part of the RP site itself, they need to be fixed. To this end, I need to point out one that exists on a page we are all seeing more and more - the server overload page.

There is a bit of a plug for the donations link on there, which goes something along the lines of: "if you would like to see less of these error messages, please donate... yadda yadda".

If you want to see less of the error messages, I would suggest sticking a bit of paper over part of the screen. If, as I think is the case, they are asking if you would like a reduced number of error messages, then the word is FEWER, not less. "If you would like to see fewer error messages..." - lovely.

'Less' relates to uncountable things, and 'fewer' relates to the countable.

Less money - fewer dollars.
Less beer - fewer bottles.
Less downtime - fewer error messages.

That's my understanding too, and the wording has annoyed me, although I didn't say anything as this mistake is so common that I doubt many people are even aware that it exists, and I suspected that I'd be howled down.
