'Less' relates to uncountable things, and 'fewer' relates to the countable.

That's my understanding too, and the wording has annoyed me, although I didn't say anything as this mistake is so common that I doubt many people are even aware that it exists, and I suspected that I'd be howled down.
I prefer to use "less", not "fewer", as it is shorter & sounds better.

mi beef is the waye peopel spel simpel words not grammer exspeshially after 1 has left sckool 2 me mor peepel need to repeet years at sckool

Plain English: My beef is with the way people spell simple words, not about grammar, especially after one has left school. To me, more people need to repeat years at school.

Trouble is, it seems students aren't allowed to repeat years anymore.

It took 4 hours, did the 3 exams(weren't too hard). After the first exam they culled over 50% of the applicants. In the end, out of 60 people in my session only about 15-20 passed to the next stage.

i get a letter or a call this/ next week. to find out if i goto the collage of knowlige (petersham)

i also think my only downfall will be the references
With spelling & punctuation like that, I would have failed him & to possibly repeat a year.

I'm not trying to be offensive, but sometimes you have to be tough to be kind, so students can learn by their mistakes.

So once again, because you're not allowed to fail students anymore, the education has slipped to a very, very, very low level.

You wouldn't pass a driver who failed his/her driving exam.

Doing an 'English' class at high school, or a Yr 7 to 12 college also includes a grounding in grammar and syntax one would expect. I am a little bit of a grammar fan, and anm continually shocked by the way kids these days can't seem to string 2 written, or indeed spoken, words together without some form of grammar or syntax error. Examples that I hear continually through Booking Office work are, 'How ya' going?', 'Me and me mate...', I wuz just wonderin' if.....',
AND the worst case of english that I get the annoyance of hearing ever so occasionally which irks the **** out of me is, 'Wassup?'

The school system, as noted in the previous post, is churning out kids who really have no idea how to write, and construct things such as essays and letters.

Why put kids through 10 to 12 years of various forms of English classes when it is obvious that they aren't learning even how to write or speak grammaticaly correct English?

I take it the highlighted word was a typing error.

First, should I tell 4XLB about the mistake he hasn't found yet? Large words I can understand spelling mistakes, but NOT small words, like spelling the words "would & sure", where he spells them "whould" & "shure". I note he hasn't found the shift key yet, for capitals.

By the way, this thread is not aimed at those where spelling may be a problem, due to either a medical condition, or left school too early, just those where the education system let them down.

Students are not going to learn by their mistakes, unless they are allowed to fail or repeat a year, where required.

That was only a typing error, not a spelling mistake! I didn't notice until now. Besides, ARG706, we are only talking about people who make mistake after mistake, not the occasional mistake or typo.

Okay fixed.

PS: ARG706, you had to notice that very small error, didn't you?

(Looks very care-full-a-lee) to make sure I haven't made any accidental mistakes!)

It sounds better only because that it what you are used to. "Less" used when "fewer" should be used grates with me.

Agreed.

It's like saying we should replace the word 'antidisestablishmentarianism' with the word 'bob'. Might be shorter, but that doesn't make it right. "Fewer" is a whole five letters. Two syllables. Ain't gonna kill ya.

Punctuation
May I ask people not forget the punctuation (& capitals for that matter) please!

EG: Sample of a post
Quote:
on monday night about 730pm i saw i think its the 86 class dont quote me trains the ones that are diesel and electric at nth sydney ( the trains that are on the eveliegh side when you approach redfern ) and they were hauling 3 silver carriages does any one know what they are and where they go
It becomes too hard to follow, without any punctuation.

With no punctuation, it could change the whole meaning, see the bottom of the first post in this thread.

Perhaps punctuationphobes could spell out the punctuation. Thus:

I either can't understand this, or people don't bother to preview their posts anymore!

Quote:

how hard would it then to negotiate in the donatin a caluse that any commercial profit is split 50/50 for example or that that donating company has first rights to the donation over competing companies or a combination of both !

theres solutiosn to everything, it's just a matter fo tryign ahrder to fidn the and compramise with all involved parties to satisfy everyone
May I ask what is a caluse?
It seems as though this post was done in haste. Occasional typos I don't mind.

Perhaps R/Page should start an English lesson.

About to reply to a post & once again found this:
Quote:
a guy jumped in front of a train at lidcombe tonight about 6.30 aparently he layed down on the tracks as the train pulled into the station luckily the train coming in the opersite direction sore him and notifyed the on coming driver. Two people jumped down onto the tracks and grabbed him by the neck and abused the [BLEEP] out of him. He then got arrested by the police
Now I know JoM may agree with me, JoM what is it, with our Australian education system? As pointed out before, on occasions, it can make it hard to understand. Were not saying you have to be perfect, just make it easier for us to read.

Please preview it first, & use punctuation (Looks like the spellcheck button is getting lonely too!)

When I first joined Railpage Australia™, I was guilty of sometimes posting in SMS chat lingo or other small errors like not using capitals at the start of sentences and for placenames. However, I soon realised from reading my own posts how ugly and disconcerting it is, so I now post in proper language.

No longer here.

I do this sometimes but there are a few poster's that consistantly will do this no matter how many times they are told. Its almost disrespectful to the other members. Sometimes I make mistakes like "connextion" which is out of a bad habbit of repetitivly writing CONNEX and CONNECTION. But I think most members can live with an accident like that. Accidents like KNIG KOG (Meaning King Kong) though are a bit "out there" and taking mistakes too far.

The next station is Frankston, This train will be terminating at Frankston.

The guy who wrote that was trashed. But the result was downright funny! I still crack up from time to time when I think of that thread Smile
