GSR says it will not carry caravans on motorail. When did the Ghan stop carrying caravans? My grandparents put their car and caravan on the Ghan in 1982.
Cheers

What is also the most amazing bad timing and management by the victorian government is the closure of the motorail dock at Spencer Street, just prior to people wanting to book their cars to Darwin!

I know up till the mid or late 80s the Ghan and the Alice had flat cars for caravans, as I saw in a documentary, quite a few flatcars too.

You cannot load your car in Melbourne. There is NO motorail service on offer at Melbourne.

I rang to book for the Darwin service or the IP in May 2004. I was told there is no motorail service in Melbourne until October 2004.

That's good news - when I rang GSR last October I was told it could be anything up to 2 years. I asked if there was a facility to offload at Geelong and was told no - I would have thought that a temporary facility at Geelong would not have been too hard to organise. The motorail car could come off the train / be added to the train there without too much time being lost.

The station at Geelong (North Shore?) for SG is only about one or two carriage lengths long. No loop or siding nearby.
Is there a suitable siding in the area where a SG motorail wagon could be loaded/unloaded. Apart from the grain loop I don't recall reading/hearing of any other Geelong sidings being standarised.

You're probably right, I don't know what the facilities are like at Geelong, just that it was frustrating to have to change my holiday plans!

I think your idea is quite a reasonable one, although I don't know how long it takes to load/unload a motorail wagon.
This has been one of the problems with the Adelaide SG line, it is not possible (although slowly improving) for SG frieght to access anywhere in Geelong directly.

You could always send you car on a freight train in a 20' container. We do cars all the time especially ex-Perth. I'll see if I can get you a dollar figure.

Appreciate that, I'd never thought of putting the car in a container!

In theory yes. What is access like for the public getting their cars to a suitable siding and for constructing the relevant facilities?
