What exactly is the definition of a transfer (or "trip") train? I gather in the US its trains (usually run by small operators) that work the many yards that a lot of large US cities have.

What are they in the Australian context? I have noticed some small (one or two track) intermodal "yards" around Sydney and Melbourne - who serves them?

Basicaly a trip train is made up of wagons off ather trains. The long haul trains work for eg, perth to sydney into enfield yard. Some of the trains loading might be for botany so all the wagons bound for botany or cooks river would be put on a trip train and taken to botany. s the long haun train may be run from perth to sydney to queensland so insted of the main train divering to botany and waisting time the trip trains take the loading

Also, trip trains can be whole trains that just run to another spot within the city...
