Would a exhuast scrubber be out of gauge as well? Several refurbished 48s have these attachments in lieu of the standard stack

I'm not sure, I guess it would depend on where it was positioned as I'm not sure where they were put on the 48 class. I do know that the only mods done to the 830 class when they worked here re the exhuast stack was to remove them and leave the outlet flush with the top of the long hood roof.

The ALCO's are known for their black copious emissions, so I would imagine any new paint scheme would not remain clean for long Wink

Its a kind of snorkel attachment, back flat along the hood, though thats probably same height or slightly diff to the stack

I never noticed the 830s on Tasrail missing their stacks in service.

Thats probably because many of the pictures around of them were taken during their early days of introduction into Tasmania. They were removed later IIRC.

Nothing in the CN website news, at least yet.

CN quietly sold their shares some time ago to the two bank/inversment parners. (according to a talk I attended by the head of ATN last year)

A couple of other comments re topic in this thread. I think the removal of the 830 exhausts was due to close clearences on the NE line tunnel, and nothing to do with the main line (can only think of the one tunnel). Anyone who ever saw the Seapak high-cube boxes on a QP will know what I mean height wise.

No idea if they all got removed or only some. My photos are all at home.

Most mainstream media outlets don't know the difference between ATN and Tasrail, so take what is written with a grain (or jar) or salt. Infact, some of the time, Tasrail don't know the difference either.

It was due to clearance with the NE tunnel according to a friend who had a close relative (brother?) working for TasRail in the '80s.

I also heard the 830s stalled more than once on Don Hill with the evening freight from Burnie. Perhaps they were tonnage miscalculations and not specifically the fault of the 830s?
