The Southern Cross Rail System is still alive and well. It is part of the Bison Rail System at http://www.bison-rail.com/album2_003.htm, and the Australian section is run by Australians. The SCRS runs a couple of Australian routes so far -
... Coals to Newcastle, Created by Peter Newell
... Melbourne (Footscray) - Ballarat, Created by Russell Beer
... Central West, Created by Chris Nelson
They have their own equipment and a heap of tested activities for the routes. The commitment is to submit 2 time slips a month to their automated time slip system. They also have a dedicated set of forums for the SCRS.
They are a very friendly bunch and would welcome new members.
As far as I know, there is no current, active VR based in Australia, although I'd be very happy to be proved wrong.
