Freight trains don't go through Newcastle, then take a right at Islington Junction and head to Broadmeadow and then head down to Sydney.
Newcastle is a terminal station, which the local council wants to close.

Yes there are problems with the condition of the NE line, but 21t axle load superfreighters should be allowed 110km/h over most of the route. Apart from localised instances there are no major speed restrictions AFAIK on the ARTC tracks in Victoria. 23T steel services would be restricted to 80 km/h.
