Maglev is too expensive for such a distance. The VFT considered going Maglev but decided against it. There's still plenty of speed available with wheel-on-rail. If they get good track alignment and 350km/h that'd be great.

Federal Govt still waiting for inland rail plan

The Acting Prime Minister says despite repeated requests, the Australian Inland Rail Expressway business plan has not been given to the Federal Government.

John Anderson has asked several times to meet the consortium that will financially back the rail line between Melbourne and Darwin.

Mr Anderson says contrary to comments from the project chairman, Everald Compton, negotiations for access to lines in NSW are progressing and an agreement could be reached within weeks.

He says he will not accept blame for the project's demise, but does not believe that will happen.

"I've repeatedly...sorry I have to say that, but I have repeatedly asked to meet with the financial backers and that has not happened," he said.

"So I think...[people] will understand that given this isn't a Government proposal, it's a private proposal, well that's terrific but I need to see the financials and actually know exactly what it is that is proposed and how it is going to be funded."
