Just reading in today's MX (Melbourne newspaper) that the "Great South Pacific Express" has been axed due to a fall in patronage as a post 9/11 result.
The last train runs June 8 2003. The service began in April '99.

Not sure. The paper said it will end June 8, but I read elsewhere that it would be "suspended".

Services suspended. The train will be mothballed at a secret location.

How long do they expect to keep it secret from us? Think about it, at least half-a-dozen people will know where they are.

Did anyone expect it to be a successful venture? I had my doubts about it ever since it began operating.

I'm really sorry it has been cancelled before I was able to try it. Just waiting to make my first million to be able to afford it.

That's exactly what I mean. Those that can afford it would probably go to Europe and travel on the Orient Express.

What will happen to the actual train , as it is very new and can be used on sg bogies ? Will the Orient Express Group take it to Europe or elsewhere in Asia, or will they try it on a another route where tourist demand is higher viz: Adelaide - Alice Springs - Darwin ? Demand to Darwin will far exceed GSR one train a week for years to come, and the Red Centre was always a big o/seas tourist drawcard. Whilst still retaining a quality product perhaps they could look at their pricing which to date has precluded all but the very silver tails .

At least they wouldn't need to change the bogies half way through every trip. Perhaps they could extend it to Melbourne
Currently in Brisbane they lift up the train and swap narrow gauge with standard for the other half to Sydney.

The train will probably get broken up and preserved like the Aurora did. I reckon it won't get scrapped - too new and expensive. Might get sold overseas though - nasty thought.
Happy Gunzelling and remember, "Go by rail!"

According to my information the last GSPE leaves Kuranda at 0545 tomorrow (Thursday) and arrives Roma Street Saturday arvo.
Is anyone on this forum monitoring this last run?
Would be interested to know on-time performance and approximate number of passengers on board.
