I rode 1116T this morning and noticed that it has a funny box with a bar coming out either side of it on it's roof. Inside, it has 4 extra cameras that are in an external housing (like you'd find on a building, ie they aren't built into the train). This was also on the M car and it was the same on the train before that. It was an M> set and it ran the 7:42aTO FSS from Altona.

Two sets have this. The bars are antenna's sending camera images to Metrol or some other place similar. Check Vicsig site it's on there

I remember them. I didn't know what they were. And they were in the same set as well, ie both 3 car sets were combined.

One of these many trials that happen all the time.

The plan was for all trains to "beam" their video back to a central location for watching. Just the refurb programs happened so quickly they hadn't trialled anything at that stage.

Why on earth would they put new cameras in to do this, instead of using the existing ones???

IIRC the cameras were either already there or pinched out of the comeng that had them before the M> refurbishment program. By the way i caught one of those sets today, on down Pakenham Ex Parliament 15.25. I left work early cos i felt sick.

Judging from memory, the comeng that did have them before refurbishment was the one with the Crime Stoppers signs on it. They were built into the roof and the housing was in the center of the carriage, instead of to the side like these other cameras. These camera aren't actually in a protective housing like the other ones were (and I think the old crime stoppers one still has it's cameras anyway). These camera's are new I'd think, they have an innovonics sticker on them.
