FYI

Lloyd's List Daily Commercial News 06 January 2004

Pasminco ceases shipping from Hobart

Pasminco is to ship interstate- and overseas-bound zinc and metal products from its Hobart smelter through northern Tasmania instead of the port of Hobart.

Zinc will be shipped in containers from either Bell Bay or Burnie, with the containers delivered to the ports by rail.

Transporting zinc in containers is a return to the practice of the late 1990s when Pasminco opted to transport its product in breakbulk form.

It is understood that there will be no change to the tonnage transported from the Hobart smelter.

Pasminco last month said that it had reached an agreement with Dutch trading giant Trafigura to handle its international sales and distribution, closing its own Asian-based distribution and warehousing facilities.

This was nearly 4 months ago. Has there been a noticable lift in pasminco rail traffic since that time?

Brian

Certainly some tranis have large blocks of zinccontainers, but it doesn't look enough for the whole production.

According to the latest Lloyd List, the PAS ships are still sceduled to visit Hobart regularly until at least August. No idea if they are taking zinc, logs or what.

Regards,

Stuart

Did this traffic finally get diverted to the north?

I can well remember driving along the Brooker with the green and yellow semis going to and from the docks.

Well i know there still a fair bit of more container on trains comming to Burnie. But i reckon either Bell bay or Devonport will get more this traffic than Burnie.
