A rail union has vowed to continue its fight to have staff at railway
stations despite concerns that this week's state budget did not directly
deal with public safety on Melbourne's railway system. Rail, Tram and
Bus Union state secretary Trevor Dobbyn said Melbourne's train stations
needed to be staffed to deter crime and to boost public confidence in
the system. Police Association secretary Senior Sergeant Paul Mullet
said the train union's campaign for more staff on stations and trains
had the association's full support.

I thought most of your stations were staffed in Melbourne?

They were until the dodgy ticketing system was introduced a little while ago.

Stations designated "Premium" are staffed first train to last train. This is about one-quarter of all stations. Very few of the remaining three-quarters of the stations are staffed at all, although a handfull are staffed during the peak periods.

Gee I get sick of people whinging to the government to get things done. Why do they never learn that the government will always do the skimpiest possible job at the highest possible cost and make almost no difference to the problem? That's why I declined to sign the "Staff Our Stations" petition.

The solution is to do the job yourself. It's the only way it will get done satisfactorily.
