Railway Archaeology: where is it?

Okay I thought I might as well jump in and do this as I have a day off.
Might be the only chance I get to ask the question.

Dunno if this is feasible given that most sites have not been visited especially interstate etc.  Still a guessing game is good fun provided clues are forthcoming.

So where is it?  Click to enlarge.

Not a hard one to start.

Hmmm, Thats quite a good one.

I would have guessed what SOAG guessed, but cant (obviously)

I'll have a stab and say just off the Main North, around Thornleigh

Carlingford?
"Sonofagunzel"

Yes!

Not that difficult if you've been there.  It's the (still operating) Carlingford Produce Store - one of the very few left in Sydney urban areas.  There used to be quite a yard there - a few hundred metres of dual track goes on beyond the buffer at the current platform.  See the link below to the station in 1968 on Richard Felstead's website.  (This was posted on an earlier RA page).  You can see the roof over the weighbridge.  Love that picture.

Now there's only the single track by the platform.

Overall what do you think of this quiz concept?

(Who are you going to give it to SOAG?)

Thanks, SOAG.

I like the quiz idea, thought about instigating it a while back, but thought it may be a little too hard to get all states involved.

Thanks Warks for getting it going.

Now for a pic....

Might be easy, might be hard. I guess well see in a sec...

One thing for sure: It's definetly Railway Archaeology!!!

Rough guess as to area - north of Armidale - Deepwater?
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

Total guess - a branch somewhere on the south - Tumbarumba line maybe?

Neither. Closer to Tumbarumba. Off the same main line.

Another hint. Rails are lifted, therefore the line is formally closed by act of parliament. That narrows it down a lot.

Sorry about that Sparkie... was just a guess, not a very good one, but the best I could really do from over here.

Next guess, somewhere on the Westvy branch, Mangoplah?

Hey, No need to apologise!

However, we are thinking more along the right lines now. It's not on the Westby branch though, Try another line that closed around that time.

Strathaird, on the Taralga branch?

Taralga branch did close around the same time so it fits. To be different I will say Kunama but I am fairly sure it has no buildings remaining.

Strathaird, on the Taralga branch?

Indeed it is, Chris.

There is actually another pic of the station on Rolfe Bozier's site.

I first came across the old station back in 1994, while on holiday with my parents. We were driving along a dirt road between Roslyn and Taralga when I see this station in a paddock.

That photo was taken on the 23 of last month. So its still sitting there, even though the rails were lifted 47 years ago!!

Over to you, Chris.

Okay, I think this one qualifies as Archaeology...

That train looks very familiar!!

My guess (very educated one at that!) will be somewhere between Brewarrina and Byrock - actually there's not much between those two so I'll say

I will go for Carrathool just to spread the guesses about, anyway it looks more like a wayside station than a junction.

Thanks Chris

(I feel a bit of a fraud as I recognised the train from your "NSW Where is it?" a while back!! Embarassed ).  Wonder what it was like travelling behind that freight as a passenger?

Okay another one.  I won't resort to the grassy embankment photos just yet!
