that is sensational work paul.
i never dreamed it would come up as good as that.
it proves the point that tsm doesn't hold a candle to the capabilities of 3d canvas pro.

No doubt 3D Canvas has better capabilities than TSM, but I don't think there would be any problem making a D50 that looks exactly like decapod's in TSM.

One trick I've learned in TSM to get the smoothing to look good is to actually break up the parts into seperate parts for the sides and ends. After you join it back together, you can smooth out the polygons on the sides, but it doesn't reduce the look of sharp edges.

For example, if you create a cylinder and turn smoothing on for that part, it will just look like this:

To create a more realistic effect, I do the following.

1. I copy the part, but I keep it in exactly the same position.

2. On the first part, I remove the polygons on the sides of the cylinder:

This means I have one part for the ends. The screenshot below shows what it would look like on it's own.

3. On the second part, I remove the polygons for the ends of the cylinder. The screenshot below shows what it would look like without any other parts loaded:

4. I join the two parts together, and then turn smoothing on:

Exactly right there James.
The final result is an S file which should be identical.

I'm a little surprised there does not seem to be an option in TSM that allows creasing of angles up to a certain limit.
This is well known to 3D Canvas users, as by default angles greater than 60 degrees get smoothed, so 7+ sided cylinders have flat ends and look smooth around the edges.

Perhaps you should produce a little sticky message for people to store tips for enhancing TSM models in this forum?

Another area where TSM can be enhanced is in rod animation - a lot of modelers are still using linear positioning for wheel links and piston connections. Using reverse rotation angles makes the animation much smoother, similar rotation calculations can be used for outside piston motions, though they are a little more complex.

Yet more pics - you'll all soon be bored with this one Smile

The loco is essentially finished (I may add a few dials etc), just a crew to add as a freight anim.
It topped out at just over 6000 polys, but for AI work it has a full 6 LODs so this drops to 4000 over 100m, down to 2500 at 700m.

The commonwealth tender is next - possible release in 1-2 weeks if all goes well.

6000 polycount is great.

The AD60 and S/wheat Trucks are waiting for bankers.

Almost there now, the beta test is progressing OK.

The tender is almost done, just the crew to complete after that...
