Railways in "Tourist Parks"

    What are the "tourist park" places in Australia which have their own train layouts?

    I know that Dreamworld in QLD had a single track loop that runs around the park (similar to Disneyland)— they had a large crash there in 1994(?) (day after I went there!). There was also a small steam railway at "Timbertown" at Wauchope in NSW— don't know if this still exists. The small park thingy next to the Port Arthur site in Tassie also has a railway in it.

    Where else?

    QLD

    Dreamworld (guanine steam locos)
    Seaworld (Diesel locos disguised as steam)
    The Big Pineapple (diesel locos disguised as steam)

    VIC

    Coal Creek (Ex- QLD cane loco)

    TAS

    Bush Mill (Replica of the TGR K-class garrett)

    Bendigo's "pioneer" village (which is/was called Sandhurst or Sandhurst Town IIRC) had a loop of track in 1989 - can't remember if loco(s) were genuine steamers or not.

    Location: Back home in Frankston.
    in victoria there used to be:
    A small track st the Carabine Gardens with a 2ft diesel running around.

    A small track down the rd from me at Whistle Stop Reserve that used to be a mini fun park.

    A 2ft Steam loco at Leisure Land in Pearcedale i don't know how big the track was i was too young to remember they have now closed down and i don't know where the loco went.

    Forgot about the Big Pineapple.

    The Nut Factory at Yandinah (sp?) in QLD has a small steam railway too IIRC.

    The custom built 2 ft diesels loco at the Caribbean Gardens in Melbourne are shocking... you need ear plugs to ride the darn thing cause its so noisy!  Shocked

    It's the fibreglass carriages that are noisy. The locos are just plain ugly.

    From what I remember, the Caribbean Gardens had a TACL tractor stored in a siding. They should pull that out sometime.

    That's 'The Ginger Factory' at Yandina. It has a look-a-like Steam engine with a diesel driven tender.

    Whiteman Park in Perth.

    Has both the Bennett Brook Railway (http://www.git.com.au/~meads/bennettbrook/index2.html) with very narrow gauge steam (mainly South African locomotives), and the Western Australia's Heritage Tramway (http://www.railpage.org.au/pets/pets02a.htm).

    When I went there with 3rd class Chester Hill Public School in 1972, Australiana (Pioneer?) Village, Wilberforce, NSW had some track, which included a mock tunnel  
    BounceRock 'N Roll!ClapVery Happy very realistic for a bunch of schoolkids. Think the "loco" might have been diesel mutton attired as steam lamb  Smile

    Therewas also a small railway doing a small loop in Taronga Park Zoo, in Sydney in the 1960s.

    I guess we should include the Scenic Railway at Scenic World in Katoomba, NSW.

    Location: Mission control Minto or Thirlmere
    Its been a while but Birdland at Batemans Bay also had, might not be now, a miniature railway ran round the exhibits. Thats if you are counting miniatures.

    But doesn't Michael Jackon's Never Never Land amusement park have some steam railway that's on a route of over 1km?

    I don't think that Whiteman Park fits into the "tourist park" category, but along the same lines is the Bundaberg Botanical Gardens, which is home to the Australian Sugar Cane Railway (formerly the Botanical Gardens Railway).  They run a Bundaberg Fowler, an Orenstein and Koppel  and have a John Fowler undergoing restoration.

    In mu opinion the only thing that Soveren Hill in Ballarat is missing is a railway!

    Going back a bit, but the Melbourne Zoo once had its own railway. I can just remember seeing it.
    Also years ago, there was one in a 'Lion Safari' park west of Melbourne. Steam outline loco on 2ft gauge I think. never saw that one, just the photos. I seem to remember seeing it for sale in Railway Digest some years later.

    Haven't been to Carribbean Gardens for a long time. But the fibreglass bodied unsprung carriages and streamlined loco came from Surfers Paradise. The other loco was a Malcolm Moore tractor.

    The Perry loco from Sandhurst town is now based at Heyfield. It was running there last year for a vintage machinery rally.

    The train was used by West Melbourne gas works then was later used at the whistlestop Amusement park in Frankston then after the park closed down it later went to Puffing Billy and as far as I no it still there and has been restored .........as for the Steam loco at Leisure Land I don't no what ever happened to it but would like to find out

    Interestingly as well as the engine surviving at PB, Ron Macallum's chairlift  lives on at Caribbean Gardens at Scoresby where it still operates.

    Newington Armaments Depot has a fantastic train that travels the site at Homebush Olympic Park. Runs Sundays or by weekday bookings for groups. The train has push/pull diesels and a great interpretation of the depot.
