PN is planning to send a substantial number of coal and superphosphate hoppers from NSW to Tas. Super will be sourced from Zinifex at Risdon.

Yes what does this mean?
Risdon is on the other side of the derwent. I know that had a line on the east side from Bellerive or somewhere but I can't imagine this is a contender.
Or will they truck or ship it across the water, to a branch on the west side.

Risdon is on the west side of the Derwent. The branch junctions with the south line at Derwent Park, IIRC.

My guess would be that (in the initial stages at least), Pivot in Devonport would be the most likely source of Super traffic, and not Rison as many people assume. Pivots main center, and its regional depots are already rail connected, and they were shipping super by rail until last year or so.
Having said this, I would like to see the Risdon line reopened, but there is a lot of politics (road lobby, port authority, bridge replacement, delegation of corporate responsibility etc) to get around before trains could run up there.

Risdon is on the west side of the Derwent. The branch junctions with the south line at Derwent Park, IIRC.

This is where a little local knowledge helps.
Both posters are correct- Risdon is on both the West and East, depending on what you are talking about.
In terms of railways, it is the west side. Risdon refers to the line that ran into the zinc factory site. Risdon Road etc is all the west side.
Risdon, the location, is on the East side. It is the site of Risdon Cove which was where the first European settlement was established in 1803; and the present site of the poor correctional facility known as HM Prison, Risdon. Opposite that is a quaint pub known as the Risdon Tavern, and in the valley behind HMP Risdon is Risdon Vale.
On the west side, in Lutana, is Risdon Road. On Risdon Road is the EZ Plant. The railwayline from Derwent Park to there was known as the Risdon line, hence the reference to "Risdon to reopen".
It is easy to get confused when locals refer to "Risdon" meaning the line, and someone interestate looks at a map of Hobart and sees that Risdon is listed as being on the Eastern Shore- a place where only a few tracks and bogies remind us of what once was on that side of the river.

Well fancy that - very confusing indeed. My geographic knowledge of that part of Tasmania came from the railway maps - naturally - and so I had no idea that Risdon (the location) was on the East side of the Derwent. Thanks for putting me/us straight.
