Answer
·  What is the gallery ?

The gallery is a module on Railpage which provides users with a video, photo and multimedia database. It contains mostly pictures or images from around Australia. The images are sorted into categories and are provided by users of the Railpage service.

·  Can I upload my photographs to the gallery ?

Yes. We encourage you to share your photographs and video with others on this service. Your uploads will show your username once they have been added to the system.

To upload photos to any shared album or your personal gallery, open the "admin options" menu near the top-right of the screen and select "add photos". A popup window will appear giving you options to select photos from your computer and specify captions for photos. When you have selected the photos to upload click on the "Upload Now" button.

No. every registered user can upload material to the shared gallery. Some gallery albums are user owned. ·  How do I insert an image from the gallery into a forum post?

Find the image in the gallery that you want to put in your forum post, and copy the URL from your browser's address bar to your computer's clipboard (i.e. http://www.railpage.com.au/modules.php?set_albumName=album167&id=G521_Arriving_from_Yelta_Platform&name=gallery&include=view_photo.php)

To insert the image into your post, click the Gallery BBCode button (last one on the bar). In the prompt, paste the URL that you copied before. In your post, the [gallery] BBCode will be automatically inserted (i.e. [gallery=http://www.railpage.com.au/modules.php?set_albumName=album167&id=G521_Arriving_from_Yelta_Platform&name=gallery&include=view_photo.php])

When you preview and post your message, the thumbnail of the image and a link will be inserted into your post, i.e.:
G521_Arriving_from_Yelta_Platform (RailPage Image Gallery)

·  Can I upload photos from within Windows instead of through the RailPage website?

Yes! You can use the "Publish to the web" feature in the Windows XP Common Tasks frame (an option to display in explorer folder windows) to upload photos to the Image Gallery.

Some requirements are:

  • Windows XP (earlier versions don't have the tasks frame)
  • Internet Explorer (you just have to log onto RP2 once in it)
  • Filenames in photos are used as captions, so therefore proper filenames (not xx-yy-99_zz.jpg! - can have whitespaces)
To use this feature, download and merge this file into your computer's registry (Microsoft says it's a security risk, we say it isn't!).
  • When in a folder containing photos, select/highlight them and choose "Publish the selected items to the Web".
  • Click through until it asks you to choose a provider - select "RailPage Australia Image Gallery".
  • It will then validate the RP2 cookie on your computer (placed by IE) - if it isn't there, then it won't let you upload!
  • Select the album that you want to upload the photos to.
  • When asked if you want to resize images, uncheck the box so windows doesn't do anything (we've got plenty of server space!)
  • It will then upload each image and show a pretty progress bar for each image as it goes.
  • Finally, click Finish and it will launch your browser with the album that you added the images to.

·  Is there a size limit on a Private Gallery?

Not at this time, however please keep in mind that server space is limited.

·  Why should I use the Railpage Gallery, when I have a perfectly good Fotopic one?

Good question! For security reasons, we now have to disallow the use of question-marks in the URL string of a forum image [IMG] tag. This means that you can no longer post Fotopic images directly in the forums; instead can provide a link only. The Railpage Gallery uses a different tag which can automatically generate a thumbnail, link, and caption for the image of your choice.
Besides - doesn't it make more sense to put your rail pictures on the biggest and best railway website on the 'net?
