Currently when you wish to discuss the many news stories on this site (would like to see more) the discussions are created in a single forum news area.
What about this.
If the news item appears in International News then the discussion is created in international News as a new thread. Same for the other topics. Queensland News is placed in Queensland?
What do you think?

This would entail sending a list of the last 10 news items received onto railpage and have a small summary and the link to the larger article. I would also have the image from the top (if there is one) and send this out nightly as part of the news personalisation module.
This is certainly something I would like to see and it would keep me coming back to the site reading news.

I would like to see Railpage grab all the operational updates from around the country and aggregate these on this site. Then we could all see what is happening around the metro
Networks.
You have a list or have the major news items in the need system under a curtail or metro trains category.
Just an idea.

Consider this idea. Railpage has personalised news already available where you can select what news areas you would like to be presented with.
Can we expand on this and have a service where when a news item arrives at railpage it checks user preferences for a search criteria and then sends an email to the user with the news item link?
This is what google does and it is very nice.
The advantage of railpage is news items are all about railways mostly.
You would set your search preferences like personal news but this would provide a daily or up to date email of the new items coming into to Railpage which match your search criteria.

Provide a personalised news feed to users, with the ability to filter by topic(s) and keyword(s).

Where a user has a news feed filter applied, offer that news feed in RSS format for the user (perhaps at /user/[id]/feed.xml). This would be a public feed allowing RSS readers such as Feedly to tap in.

The newsletter suggested earlier could be personalised by category so that only those that are interesting to subscribers are sent to them.

Google has a great service where you can set keywords and once news arrives at Google matching the keywords an email is dispatched with a summary and link to the article. It would be fantastic for users to subscribe to the keywords search for news and receive an email with the summary of news items matching the keyword(s)
e.g.
High Speed Rail
Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel
Metro Trains
Spain
Amtrak
Users maintain a news profile (we have some of this already) but with the addition of the notification engine being able to send a pop-up and/or an email etc.

At the bottom of the news articles forum members can make comments, but these comments just appear in a new thread in the news forum.
Wouldn't it be better to repeat the comments from the associated forum thread underneath the article? This seem to be the WWW norm these days.

Reading through the International News discussion (I did see all the other threads in detail when they were online) seems there could be a way forward. Most sites (and I notice Railpage too) syndicate their news using RSS principles.
I have suggested in the developer forum using news from http://www.railwaygazette.com/rss.xml which appears to be all international and posting this as a news item into the RP system.
That would give you a new of news items per day to read and then if you so wish open a discussion on.
compromise?

Can we have news for train simulators? I have asked for a new section and I can post the news. Lots of new routes and locos.
Hopeful we can do.

While this is a small and unnoticeable idea, it would be good for railpage to update the name to something more recent as cityrail was abolished about 7 years ago
An idea for a new name would be 'Sydney Region news"
