In December 2000, Genesee & Wyoming purchased (in partnership with Wesfarmers) the West Australian government freight business, Westrail. However, even before the deal was completed the opportunity was taken to trial Westrail Q class locos (more modern than anything in the G & W fleet at the time) on hook and pull services operated on behalf of Toll Rail between Adelaide and Perth. On 17 November 2000, Q313 leads ALF22/CLP11 through the back blocks of Port Adelaide with Toll's 4PA4T intermodal service from Perth.
