Hamersley Iron had their C636 class and some M363 class locos rebuilt by Comeng Bassendean between 1981 and 1985 into the CE636R model. They kept their original road numbers: 3006 - 3017, and 4031-4037, 4039-4041, 4043 and 4047. All these units bar 3017 were scrapped in 1998.
Unit 3017 survives today at the PRHS museum at Two Mile, Dampier, and has seen work on construction trains for Hamersley Iron, the last time in 2005.
Robe River bought two second hand former Penn Central Alco C636 locomotives, and these were remanufactured by Comeng (WA) in 1986. they feature the vertical radiators, and the 'Pilbara' cab and were classed CE636R.
Both units were sold to Coote Industrial and rebuilt by GTSA Engineering at Maddington, WA and painted in FMG colours for use on the construction of FMG's railway from Port Hedland to Cloud Break mine. The have since been stored out of service at Wedgefield, Port Hedland, WA.
