By 1972, WAGR had acquired 13 of these slightly longer units that were not fitted with dynamic brakes. The RA class units weighed 92.5 ton 94.5t with a 16t nominal axleload.
In 1974, three of the last RA class members (nos RA1914, 1917 and 1918) were converted to standard gauge to meet traffic needs, and were redesignated as KA class locomotives, nos KA211 - KA213.
