The Z class was an 0-6-0 light jetty shunter built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns as subcontractor to the Drewry Car Co. It was fitted with the well tried and proven Gardner 8LW diesel engine, driving through a Wilson epicyclic semi-automatic transmission to the six-coupled wheels. The cab is mounted high above the hoods, affording good visibility. They were used at Robb Jetty. Power rating was 140hp, max speed 17mph 28km/h.
Three were built and all three preserved.
We identify rebuilt and renumbered locomotives from this class as well as other classes with similar mechanical configurations and present those classes below.
