Train service stalled

Rail NewsA PROMISE to extend train services to South Morang has been broken by the State Government.

The pledge to extend the railway was made before the 1999 election, and money was allocated in the 2000 Budget.

But Transport Minister Peter Batchelor has now said the South Morang extension "may be possible in the long term".

The Opposition said the backflip was the Scoresby freeway of the northeast, a reference to the Government's reversal on tolling the freeway.

"We have identified current capacity issues . . . which must be resolved before the Government can look at projects such as extending the line to South Morang," Mr Batchelor said.

The same applied to proposals for a new line to Epping North, he said.

The backflip was made public on a State Government website this week.

This week's statement follows a recent campaign led by the City of Whittlesea to get the South Morang extension built.

A spokeswoman for Mr Batchelor said the Bracks Government had promised a bus service to South Morang in the lead-up to the 2002 election, which had been introduced.

Come on !! The old railway reservation is still there. The prospective passengers are there. If you do not provide a good service right away, then they will buy more cars and keep using them.

It will take time to build the extension anyway. So what is the capacity problem ? Is it that there are too many railway projects to build and manage ? I am sure that making the money available will find the skills and material needed.

Groans!

The Epping-South Morang extension isn't going to do anything to the capacity problems! It won't even need more trains and drivers - not for a few years (the time it will take to biuld it) anyway. Just get on with it and have the capacity problems fixed while it's under construction!

Is the "capacity problem" the number of passengers already travelling? I'm not very familiar with the Epping line loadings. Also there are single line sections which might limit the ability to run more trains. Part of the case for proposing the reinstatement to South Morang is to service a lot of people - hence more capacity will be needed.
