| Business class mooted for trains |
The New South Wales Government is being urged to consider a business class on inter-urban trains between Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and Katoomba.
The Centre for Independent Studies says standards on all inter-city trains in the state have fallen since they became single-class trains in 1974.
A research fellow at the centre, Dr Oliver Hartwich, says a business class section on trains would enable commuters, particularly those who have to travel long distances, to at least be served a cup of coffee.
"I think it is quite remarkable that today when you are travelling on a plane from Sydney to Melbourne, a 90-minute journey, and you are offered a free cup of coffee even in Qantas economy," he said.
"But if you are travelling two-and-a-half hours on a train, you can't even get anything to drink on the train. I think that is a first step."
A spokesman for Transport Minister David Campbell says there are no plans to introduce business class to CityRail services.
