Business class mooted for trains

New South Wales Rail NewsThe New South Wales Government is being urged to consider a business class on inter-urban trains between Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and Katoomba.

The Centre for Independent Studies says standards on all inter-city trains in the state have fallen since they became single-class trains in 1974.

A research fellow at the centre, Dr Oliver Hartwich, says a business class section on trains would enable commuters, particularly those who have to travel long distances, to at least be served a cup of coffee.

"I think it is quite remarkable that today when you are travelling on a plane from Sydney to Melbourne, a 90-minute journey, and you are offered a free cup of coffee even in Qantas economy," he said.

"But if you are travelling two-and-a-half hours on a train, you can't even get anything to drink on the train. I think that is a first step."

A spokesman for Transport Minister David Campbell says there are no plans to introduce business class to CityRail services.

Fairfax ran a column by Hartwich [www.nationaltimes.com.au] making this call last week.

Its reads as an attack on V-sets and suggests that only Australia still runs inter-urban trains without catering, maybe an erroneous reading word "Intercity" on the front.

The column brought some calls for high-speed inter-urban lines and services.

I was thinking along similar lines this morning. Optional reserved seats would be a good way to retain business travellers. Business would be a good way to provide a better service for those willing to pay a bit extra (not so much for enforcing class distinctions)and should be introduced for some Cityrail Intercity and Vline services. Also what about having a business class carriage on airport line trains in Sydney in Brisbane. Maybe a single deck Millenium or Oscar carriage could be developed for this purpose.

For some country trains I would suggest having more of a tourist class.

Also would there be merit in bringing back parlour cars for longer services?
