GRAFFITI vandals have wrecked a V/Line train carriage, spraying a huge 25m mural that will cost thousands of dollars to scrub off.

Police are investigating the brazen graffiti attack on Tuesday night at Albury station, where the V/Line train was parked before travelling to Melbourne on Wednesday.

V/Line chief Theo Taifalos lashed the “bored and witless people” responsible for painting the entire carriage blue and covering it with a red tag, part of which said “Rumba”.

The train was driven to Melbourne on its usual 6.35am run and then taken for cleaning.

“I will not give the perpetrators of this shoddy so-called ‘artwork’ the pleasure of seeing this train on the tracks,” Mr Taifalos said.

“To stop copycat attacks, the train will be in the workshop until all the paint is removed.”

The clean-up bill was estimated to be in the thousands of dollars, while commuters also suffered as two services were cancelled.

“The victims of this crime are the V/Line customers who rely on the train service for work, medical appointments, study and social events,” Mr Taifalos said.

Inspector Tony Moodie, from Albury police, said it was “very unusual for that sort of thing to happen in Albury” and graffiti attacks on trains were rare.

Graffiti costs V/Line about $400,000 each year and Mr Taifalos said he was fed up.

“I will not tolerate the wilful damage of trains or infrastructure and I will be upping security to prevent this happening again,” he said.
