NEARLY 120,000 new jobs would be created and 104,000 new residents would move in to Western Sydney if the state and federal government committed to a rail link from Campbelltown to Rouse Hill via the Badgerys Creek airport.
That’s the findings of a report commissioned by property giant Lend Lease, the rich-list Baiada and Ingham families and the University of Sydney, who have joined with other firms and local councils to push a rail option along a north-south corridor.
The Turnbull and Berejiklian governments are currently conducting scoping studies to determine when, and along what route, a rail line to the Western Sydney airport should be built.

A Deloitte report commissioned as part of the push and provided to The Daily Telegraph shows the north-south rail option would add $44.7 billion to the economy between 2024 and 2040 — $3.6 billion every year by the end of that period.

Picture: Renee Nowytarger/The AustralianApproximately 300,000 Western Sydney residents leave the region each day to travel to work, and without a north-south link, they would be reliant on lengthy commutes east to employment opportunities.
Already there is an emerging push among federal Coalition MPs for a north-south option.
But it’s understood the state government’s preference would be for an east-west link connecting with the Western Metro which terminates in Parramatta.
A Transport for NSW spokesman said options were still being investigated, but “One of the key considerations has been the capacity of the T1 (Western) line”.
John Vassallo, chief executive of the Baiada family’s property development arm Celestino, said “the north-south rail line would be the Sydney Harbour Bridge of the West”.
“There are currently 2 million residents of Western Sydney who are not serviced by a north-south rail line and this is holding back business investment and job growth in the region,” he said.
The North West Rail Link is forging ahead created transport links within Western Sydney’s swelling population.

Campbelltown, Liverpool and Camden councils also support that option.
“Camden is the fastest growing area in the state and this rail link will create significant economic benefits for the community by providing a direct public transport service along the Western Sydney growth corridor between Camden and Penrith,” Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak said.
Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher declined to comment on a favoured route.
“The scoping study will report to the two governments within the next few months, and we’ll have more to say about the way forward once we’ve received that,” he said.
