Bombardier Transportation has signed two frame contracts to deliver 33 TRAXX locomotives to rolling stock leasing company Akiem.
Combined, the two contracts have a value of €112m ($128m).
The 33 locomotives to be supplied will comprise TRAXX MS 2 (multi-system), TRAXX AC 3 (alternating current) and TRAXX DC3 (direct current) units.
Bombardier Transportation Ecosystem Freight Corridors head Peter Ammann said: “We introduced our versatile TRAXX locomotives platform 18 years ago and since then have continuously innovated and improved its features.
“With over 2,200 units sold, the platform has demonstrated its success.”
The TRAXX AC3 and TRAXX DC3 locomotives are equipped with a diesel engine to operate on the non-electrified sections, while the TRAXX MS locomotive is designed to operate on Europe’s four main rail supply voltages.
“We are strengthening our ability to deliver reliable, efficient, safe and cost-effective traction services expected by both passenger and freight operators.”
Capable of operating on 15kV, 25kV AC, as well as 1.5 and 3kV DC rail supply voltages, the TRAXX MS unit enables the operator necessary flexibility and interoperability to carry out cross-border rail transport across Europe.
Akiem Group CEO Fabien Rochefort said: “This additional batch of 33 TRAXX locomotives meets our customers’ demand across Europe.
“With a fleet of 180 TRAXX by 2020, we are strengthening our ability to deliver reliable, efficient, safe and cost-effective traction services expected by both passenger and freight operators.
“This fruitful partnership with Bombardier Transportation enables Akiem Group industrial teams to design and deliver tailor-made services and maintenance solutions across Europe.”
The deliveries of the locomotives are scheduled between 2019-21.
Last month, Bombardier Transportation won a $324m high-speed train supply contract from China Railway.
The contract requires Bombardier’s Chinese joint venture (JV) Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) Transportation (BST) to supply 120 CR400AF Chinese standard high-speed train cars.
