1944-built steam loco Austerity ‘The Duke’ has had its boiler fitted after a number of years undergoing work.

The work was carried out by a specialist repairer 50 miles from Wirksworth.

The locomotive now looks more like a steam locomotive once again.

On the day of the lift, The Duke was sat in the car park as owner, Tim, arrived, and found the locomotive was shunted the previous day with volunteers making sure everything was properly oiled.

The boiler insulation was delivered in the morning, but there was a delay to the boiler arrival due to an issue with the ashpan, which the team had decided to fit at their works rather than on-site.

Around 5 pm on the day of the lift, the boiler arrived. It took around 2 hours to lift into place.

The smokebox isn’t yet attached to the barrel and is held in place by a ratchet strap but this should be attached in the near future.
