Today, nearly a century and a half after Melbourne businessman J. Robertson first proposed a rail link between Adelaide and Australia's tropical north, one of the great dreams of nation-building becomes a reality.
The achievement is one of which the governments, construction groups, and workers - 1400 at its height - can feel proud. From today, however, the real challenge begins: to make the project a commercial success, and achieve the broader national objectives that justify the public sector contribution.
