Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of the 36-km long Phase I of Delhi Cycle Walk project, which is proposed to be a ₹550-crore project, at Tughlakabad, New Delhi today. This project will be implemented by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and likely to be completed in four years.
According to Master Plan, the entire Delhi Cycle Walk project will cover a 200 km network whereas Phase-1 will cover 36km connecting 38 residential colonies and 2 major commercial centers of the city. In the phase-I around 36-km long corridor with four corridors connecting Tuglaqabad, Greater Kailash, Nehru Place, Delhi Secretariat and other important destinations are planned. This project will serve as Last Mile Connectivity to the Delhites. The Delhi Cycle walk shall become a safer and greener alternative that would reduce the vehicular load of the city roads.
The main objectives of this project are to promote a healthy lifestyle and to provide last-mile connectivity to the citizens of Delhi.
“CycleWalk will also connect all master plan greens & make Delhi a city of connected forests & lakes with the objective to promote a healthy lifestyle & provide last-mile connectivity. This will become a safer & greener alternative that would reduce vehicular in the city”, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

“Conceptualised as a long dedicated corridor for pedestrians & cyclists. This corridor would loop around the city like a ring & connect with metro stations, bus stands, high-density residential areas, business districts & industrial, recreational & educational districts”, he added.
“The Delhi Cycle Walk will be a controlled track with defined and secure entrance points near residential areas and exit points near places of work, schools and so on. These points of entry will be called origin-destination plazas and will have facilities like washrooms, cycle parking and repairs points among other facilities,” said a senior official from Delhi Development Authority.
“The forests which have been cut by roads will now be joined by building acre sunken lawns on both sides of the roads and then create a connection like an under a bridge. Cycle Walk tracks shall move seamlessly from one forest to another”, another official said.
We hope this world-class Cycle Walk project will set an example for other cities to follow.
