Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Co Limited (MPMRCL) has initiated issuing notices to acquire land for the construction of the Bhopal metro rail project. The phase-I route starts from Arera Hills and ends at AIIMS, Bhopal. This project could highly affect the land owners along this route.
A local businessman from Jehangirabad quotes, “my shop is about 20 square feet. Officials say that the authorities will demolish around 20 to 25 sq.ft. of land. It is a very typical situation here.”
Although, when approached, the district administration declined to comment on the matter. In addition, a local officer stated that he was not aware of the situation. “MPMRCL has not informed the administration yet,” he added.
Costs and funding
The plan was issued in 2009. The 2009 cost number for the construction of the elevated metro is Rs135 crore per kilometre and underground construction cost was estimated at Rs400 crore (the cost will be lower when the depth is within 10 metres and the subsoil is hard). However, the cost of this project is definitely expected to rise further since the project has been delayed by almost 10 years, experts stated.
“The project could adversely impact a huge number of business and residential land holders. “In addition the government needs to deflect a repeat of the situation when the BRTS corridor was being constructed,” an officer said.
Metro likely to affect BRTS
The rail route will cover a distance of 2 km from the Board Office Square to Habibganj railway station. MPMRCL has blocked the flyover construction area ahead of the Board Office intersection. “This would be the first area where the metro rail would pass through,” said a BCLL officer. The authorities will take down BRTS for metro rail development. Therefore, BCLL will soon have to come up with a plan for rerouting the floe of traffic.
