The Krishnapatnam-Venkatachalam railway line that was extended up to Obulavaripalli station on the Chennai-Mumbai route, is all set to be open for passenger train services soon.
As of now, the line is only being used for freight services from Krishnapatnam Port, a major private deep water port in the state.
South Central Railway (SCR) officials said once the passenger trains take to plying in the route along with the existing goods train services, many people will reap the benefits of additional travelling facilities.
In keeping with the target to start passenger train services, the railway authorities have already drawn up a plan of action to come up with various passenger amenities at the stations between Krishnapatnam and Rapuru“We have kept the works on a war-footing and the estimate cost for the development of passenger amenities at the stations such as Nidiguntapalem, Venkatachalam Road Jn, Choutupalyam Halt, Kasumuru, Kottundapalle, Aduripalle and Rapuru has been pegged at Rs 60 crore,” said a SCR spokesperson.
Speculation is rife among railway officials that the new Krishnapatnam Port-Venkatachalam-Obulavaripalli railway line will be able to ease the load of both passenger and goods train services in Vijayawada-Gudur-Renigunta and Guntakal sections.
“We are expecting a significant growth in the freight traffic after the upcoming railway line is completed. This will also pave the way for a socio-economic growth in the hinterland areas. Besides, the revenues raked in by the railways will also inflate once the passenger services begin on this route,” said an SCR official.
According to sources, the electrification and other railway line works on the 82 km stretch between Venkatachalam Road Jn-Vellikallu (60 km) as well as Cherlopalli-Obulavaripalli (22 km), have been completed. Besides, tunnel works are also progressing on a seven km stretch between Cherlopalli and Vellikallu. “Once we are done with these works, we hope that the entire corridor linking Krishnapatnam with Venkatachalam and Obulavaripalle will become operational for train services,” SCR officials told TOI.
