PUNCTUALITY on Metro train services has bounced back to above 90 per cent after a computer glitch resulted in the train operator being fined $1.2 million for poor performance in July.
The unprecedented outage shut the entire network at peak time on July 13, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded for up to three hours.
The outage led to 224 services being cancelled and 378 services running late that day.
The fine was in addition to the $627,000 Metro paid out in compensation to 175,000 commuters.

Picture: David CairdPublic Transport Victoria chief executive officer Jeroen Weimar said Metro delivered 91.6 per cent of services on time in August, Yarra Trams delivered 82.9 per cent of services on time, while V/Line delivered 85.2 per cent of services on time — its best performance in almost a year.
“Punctuality on our metropolitan trains is back up, with trams and regional trains also tracking above their 12-month average, which is where we want to be heading,” Mr Weimar said.
On the tram network, punctuality improvements were seen on more than half the lines, when compared to the same month in 2016.
Tram routes 57, 59 and 82 were benefiting from completion of the Tullamarine Freeway widening project, which had diverted traffic on to local roads, slowing trams.
“Yarra Trams manages the network in real-time to adjust to the road conditions and continues to work closely with our on-road partners, including VicRoads, to make tram journey times more reliable,” Mr Weimar said.
“We also have 56 E-Class trams now in service, allowing us to redeploy other trams across the network to better match capacity with demand.”
On the tram network, punctuality improvements were seen on more than half the lines, when compared to the same month in 2016.V/Line delivered its strongest punctuality results since October last year, with almost all lines delivering results above the 12-month average.
The biggest improvements were seen on the Bairnsdale line, and on lines servicing destinations in the north east including Albury and Shepparton.
“Bairnsdale line saw a 12 per cent increase in punctuality to record its best result since January,” Mr Weimar said.
“Passengers travelling to Albury, Shepparton and Seymour also saw significant improvements in services.”
