Rail Revival Alliance to meet with Louise Staley Member for Ripon
Prominent Railway Historian and Author John Evans, has teamed up with Rail Tours Australia for a celebration of the Centenary of the Trans-Australian Railway with accepting the request to lead a 2 day tour following a portion of the original route of the old East-West Railway.
The Trans-Australian Railway was completed on the 17th October 1917 when the rail lines constructed simultaneously from Kalgoorlie and Port Augusta were linked at 1.45 pm, at a site 4kms west of Ooldea. 5 days later the first passenger train departed Port Augusta for the west.
A great milestone was achieved within the country's railways and the history of a Nation.
The journey from Sydney to Perth however, was still a long, multi gauged trip travelling through Melbourne and Adelaide. Passengers were obliged to change trains at Break of Gauge stations along the way including Terowie, Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie.
Rail Tours Australia will be retracing the railway journey of yesteryear from Adelaide through Burra, Terowie, Peterborough to Quorn and then to Port Augusta for the celebration of the Centenary of the Trans-Australian Railway. Guests will enjoy following the old narrow gauge railway alignment from Peterborough to Quorn in the comfort of an all terrain 4WD coach.
John has authored numerous books on the history of the Mid North of South Australia's railway lines including "Proceed to Quorn", a publication about the railway line that made up a portion of the old East - West route of 1917. He is also Patron of Steamtown Peterborough, and has a treasure trove of stories and anecdotes about the early days to share on this tour.
On Sunday the 22nd the tour will leave the coach behind and board the Pichi Richi Railway Trans Australian Railway Celebration special heritage train through the Pichi Richi Pass to Port Augusta. Here the official celebrations of the Centenary of the Trans Australian Railway will be enjoyed with activities and events planned for the whole day
Rail Tours Australia have also announced a special Early Bird Price for all bookings made and paid in full before the 18th of August.
